Power Supply to Replace 4 "D" Batteries

01/13/2013 7:11 PM

The screen display on my NordicTrac exerecise machine is powered by 4 "D" batteries in series but the latch on the plastic door that holds batteries in position is broken and NordicTrac charges an outrageous price for a replacement. I would like to install a wall current powered power supply and dispense with batteries altogether. Can anyone suggest a brand name and internet source for such a supply?

Can we assume that there is no provision for an AC power supply? No plug?

Each battery produces 1.5 volts. Display will draw almost nothing. So, any 6-9V power supply that produces one amp or less will be fine.

Plug size and polarity are up to you if there is a female plug on the machine.

What does the mfg web site say?

Please see Rule #7 in CR4 Rules of Conduct about posting email addresses.

You will need a 6V DC adapter which should be easy to find just about anywhere.

Here is one I found on EBAY.

Just make sure the polarity is correct.

You do realize this is an engineering website, right?

You need to first explain why the duct tape didn't work.

Duct tape will provide a cheap way to keep the batteries in place while you order your AC adapter.

Is there no way of sellotaping the latch closed?

Couldn't you glue some pieces of velcro on to secure the latch?

Link up a small dynamo and go off grid. It will add to your workload, but it is an exercise machine isn't it?

The problem is which comes first, the display or the exercise to generate the power!

I would tape the door shut. If you don't like the look of duct tape, use scotch tape or the stronger clear mailing tape. If you want to go high tech, fold the tape back on itself at one end so you can open and re-close it.

i'm currently designing a power conditioner for a transformer ...

what you actually want to do is to find a local small repair shop that fixes your thing (good looking or bad looking)

it's coz:

  1. Battery can supply Hi-Amp-s (without excess heat)
  2. Battery doesnot emit parasitic EMI RFI
  3. Battery doesnot need voltage regulator (in principle)
  4. Battery doesnot depend on Grid Power Q or Weather
  5. IF rechargable IT can be recharged (althou the continuous Quality service h for rechargable batteries are less than those for Use&Waste 1-s)
  6. TF is sensitive to Bad Power Quality and/or Weather
  7. a good quality power-supply is hard to determine as such (hard to tell without excessive lab wich 1 is)
  8. a Quality power supply costs a lot (not it's manufacuring price - but the reseller add-on-to(sell items "earn"))
  9. it can have multiple failures (plug(bad contact) AC DC cabling sub-s="ec.c e.c. ...")
  10. Overload protection (for lab/unconvetional use - buying anew battery is cheper)
