Ships Cargo and Water Ballast Tanks

01/29/2013 12:32 AM

We started a new dimension our our Tank Cleaning and Decontamination Business.....we use Degreasers, and Hot and Cold 3-4,000 PSI Pressure Washers. What is best practice for the Following:

(1) surface Preparation?

(2) Degreaser Application?

(3) Pressure Washing method hot or Cold?

So this thread is subliminal advertising? If so, then expect it to be reported to Admin. If not, then please re-phrase the question into a form that the forum might answer.

I must admit the question is ambiguous indeed.

In general I would say. Just do the same thing you already did before and just add the larger dimension to it.

Where exactly is your problem? 3 gallons of washer for 10 square feet before is 30 gallons for 100 square feet now!

Do you use a pressure washer now? Then it still will be a pressure washer in the larger application. Maybe a larger washer though.

Did you use hot yesterday for the grease tank? It will be hot for the grease in the larger tank.

If for any reasons the contamination changes with the size (and you did not say if you have been cleaning ballast tanks before) you might want to rephrase the question and state the contamination. Make it easy for the forum to see that you put the little thought into it before you submit the question, which means: lay out what you intend to do and why you think you do this. This way we understand what you already know and don't tell you the things you havent been asking for!

Bring it on!

(1) Hot water power wash

(2) Hot water, plus degreaser, power wash

(3) Hot

Without knowing the contaminants, it is impossible to answer the question. You should know that.

H2So4 would require different procedures than sea water ballast or petroleum products.

Might help if you could clarify:

  1. You are preparing the surface by cleaning it. Do you mean what stages must be gone through as part of a decontamination procedure?
  2. Are you asking how to use the degreasers (eg. foaming or spray, what ratios and what temperature)? Or what degreasers to use?
  3. Are you asking if the industry standard is to use hot or cold water?

If you post a bit more info, including what you are cleaning and if you mean disinfecting or simply soil removal by decontamination, that might help.
