Queries on Breather

02/14/2013 8:15 AM

I have a breather installed on a hydraulic tank (atmospheric hydraulic tank). For some reason that breather is only able to suck in air from the atmosphere, but is unable to vent air from the tank to the atmosphere. Has anyone experienced a similar case and if so, what could be the possible reasons for this awkward happening? Any advice is appreciated.

The filter is probably clogged. When outside air comes in, it is able to displace the sludge enough to move through; in the opposite direction, it plugs up.

Maybe get a new breather, or clean the filter on this one.

GA

I was thinking exactly the same, it would act as if you had a flap over the inner opening; check and clean the inside, or replace

How do you know that the breather is taking in air from the outside? If the breather is clogged could be drawing air from other areas. Air will pass easier though seals and holes like pin hole in a weld then the oil will.

"... but is unable to vent air from the tank to the atmosphere."

What is the fluid level compared to the level of the end of the vent tube? If the fluid is above the vent opening, it would account for your trouble.

Sometimes breathers are also one-way valves. This prevents back-flow and stops the contents of the tank being expelled through the breather.

Normally in nights it breathes in and during days breathes out. If the air breathed in could not get expelled out, won't it exert excess pressure on the liquid level?

I have often seen cartridge type (spin on) automotive oil filters used as filtered breathers for hydraulic tanks. This is an inexpensive way to get an effective filtered vent and they work rather well to filter dust and other debris that would enter the tank through an open vent.

This works fine as long as the filter used does not have an anti drain back (check) valve. If it does, it can cause the very issue you are seeing. Air can enter the tank but excess pressure is not vented back out of the tank.

I suggest you check the filter type you are using and verify that it does not have an integral check valve and if it does, simply replace it with a similar type which does not have this feature.

Cheaper filters often do not have anti drain back valves but price alone is not a valid indicator. So check before you use a different/new filter type.

Have FUN!

What was the resolution of this problem? I am curious and I am sure others are also.
