02/19/2013 3:13 AM

Hello.

Area of question : ASME SECTION.1 Nozzle located on welding seam between elip head and shell .

I have a question about fabrication of Asme section.1 DRUM.

""Question: 2" nozzle is located on welding seam between elip head and shell(section of straight flange). Is it possible to locate ???

I knew that some nozzles are located on welding seam between shell and shell.

I am confused about my question.

As my experience, minimum distance between two welding lines is 50mm.

So, your case should be as below picture.

Here is a good post about minimum distance between two welds.

I believe there was a thread here on cr4 about putting a nozzle on a weld seam. I can't se em to find it. But if I recall. It can be done. But you would have to put in a reinforce or doubler plate.

The ASME Code Section III, Div. 1, UW-14, states that any type of opening, that meets the requirements for reinforcement given in UG-37, or UG-39, may be located in a welded joint. That joint may be a head to shell seam, or in a Catagory B or C weld. If you place a nozzle in a weld of those types, you must meet the requirements of UW-51 (full RT) for a length equal to three times the diameter of the opening with the center of the hole at midlength.

Sorry, slip of the finger!! The ASME Code is Section VIII, of course, not Section III

Thank you for Your relpy.

Asme section.I is not same with Asme section.VIII.

All joint eff. is 1.0 in ASME Section. I and I opinion it is possible to weld a nozzle on welding seam.

Thanks.

Of course, Section I is not the same as Section VIII. I used Section VIII as a guide for procedure. Section I only states that any type opening that meets the requirement for compensation given in PG-32 thru PG-44 may be located in a welded joint (PW-14). RT would be per Table PW-11.
