Measurement of Earth Resistance Value

02/21/2013 2:46 AM

Is there any possiblity to measure the earth resistance between earth pits by using digital multimeter provided no physical connection between these two earth pits.

No, you cannot accurately measure the earth resistance using only a digital multimeter. The instrument is not designed to accomplish what you desire. That is why there are specialized earth resistance meters on the market. They are 4-terminal devices that inject a current into the earth between two probes, and measure the resulting voltage between two separate sensing probes to calculate the resistance. Check out meters by Megger® or AEMC Instruments®, for example.

A good introduction to ground grid testing can be found as a free PDF at the following link:

in my case they have checked the continuity between two earth electrodes (ensured no connection from the earth electrodes), it is showing continuity between these two electrodes using digital multimeter.

Will it show continuity?

The statement in the first paragraph of this post answers the question raised in the original posting at the top, and the question in the second paragraph of this post is rendered superfluous by the content of the first paragraph.

That publication is on my shelf and I used it as a reference for an internal document. It has good, useful, easy-to-understand information.

I use both the Biddle Megger and the Fluke Earth Ground Tester.

Dear All

In our project we do measure earth resistance value by using Earth tester 3rod.

1 rod will be connecting to the earth rod under test and the other two will srive to earth 10Mtrs apart.

If you want to measure the resistance of two chunk´s of earth, physically separated, yes, you can!

in more than one way!
