Big Gun

02/22/2013 11:37 PM

This is not about guns, really.

Was doing some research on the internet regarding "Armour" and found this

WWI German soldiers picture.

Does anyone know what kind of gun the fellow to the far right is holding?

It looks like a giant sniper gun. It seems really advanced for it's time.

I'm curious ... never seen anything like this before.

There were two types of 13.2X92 cartridges, a Berdan type primer and a recessed pinfire ignition system. The .51 cal. ammo goes for $70 apiece now but are too collectible to shoot.
Hold it wrong and you would break your arm!

These 13mm Mauser rifles were used to shoot through the armor on WWI tanks. These weapons inspired the U.S. Army to ask John Browning to design a machinegun that fires similar ammunition. Since then vehicle armor has gotten better, but so have the bullets; consequently, most armored vehicles encountered by the U.S. Army (such as BMP fighting vehicles) can still be destroyed by Browning .50-caliber machineguns. Nowadays McMillan makes a .50-caliber bolt-action rifle similar to that German weapon. Until recently a Canadian sniper, armed with the McMillan, held the world record for the longest-range combat kill with a rifle.

They had a bore that grew smaller towards the muzzle. I believe that idea was stolen by the U.S. when they made the Abrams main gun.

The 88mm German gun might also have had the pinched bore.

Of course I could be completely wrong about all of this.

A long barrel increases accuracy but is not more advanced technology, it just shoots straighter. The Kentucky long rifles would shoot the eye out of a squirrel, just ask Jed Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies. He could shoot flies off the fence, but only if they were in flight.

Longer barrels also allow a greater part of the powder to be consumed behind the projectile. This permits greater muzzle velocity. Home mixed black powder burns at an inconsistant rate necessitating a long barrel. Pistols of that era were short range.

That is interesting, the small guy has the biggest gun! Also that armour plating, must have been heavy.

I think that was to show the Germans have a sense of humor.

When I was still at home in Indiana going to Jr. College back in the late 60's, Dad and my brothers and I would sit out in the front driveway on folding chairs and pass around a Remington 22 semi-auto with open sights and shoot flies off the persimmons on Moms persimmon tree. If you hit the persimmon Dad would always admonish us with some colorful phrase like, "Hey, dumbass, quit hitting the fruit!" which was embarassing enough to make us better shots.

I would imagine that considering the accuracy of a barrel that long that the best shooter got the long gun and I myself could easily put one down the barrel of a tank at up to 200 or 300 yards with open iron sights, especially resting it on a sand bag from a bunker.

I wouldn't want to be any closer than that anyway!

I can still put a 50 cal. black powder round out of a Thompson Center Hawken through a quarter tapped into the top of a fence post at 100 yards, standing, with open sights as many times as you like.

I think tho that it is time to put an end to all wars of any description and we should all of us get together for a nice frothy pint and talk about the 'good ol' days', what we've learned from them and where we are going next!

I hear it's snowing in Colorado!

The 'good ol' days'...

Watch the video at 'thrivemovement.com' and learn why 'we', no 'government' doesn't learn. Foster Gambel followed the money further than Glen Beck, and even Fox news gets dupped by the BS of politics. A republican is trying to silence a vote on a bill here in Co. that would keep the Fed's from detaining a resident of this state indefinatly by calling for an oral vote that is not recorded which will mean the bill will be tabled with no record of who voted for or against. Do you know how many detainment camps have been built across the USA? Do you know what people you voted for are doing?

WE ARE BEING SCREWED!

Re: Big Gun

It only took watching 2-3 minutes of the video before realizing that a Google Search of "Reviews" was justified (before wasting any more time)...

"Thrive is dangerous because it invites us to put our faith for the future in a fantasy. A fantasy that free energy is possible, a fantasy that the only thing that is preventing us from creating a benign and enlightened society is a handful of powerful families."

And at: Thrive's Declining Popularity: The Empirical Proof

"November 11, 2012, (was) the one-year anniversary of the initial release of the conspiracy theory movie Thrive.... [The review concludes with an explanation as to why the Wikipedia page for 'Thrive (the Movie)' was deleted:
"One Wikipedia editor summed up the argument against Thrive with these very telling statements, which ultimately won the debate: This page [the one on Thrive that was eventually deleted] reeks of promotion and has the barest credentials. I must agree with nominator that the page was created by a known sock puppet of (a known conspiracy theorist troll) .... [An anti-Thrive Wikipedia user] makes the valid points (that) this film has no wide interest and zero sources other than blogs…"

and at (an earlier review) Another Negative Review of Thrive Hits the Nail on the Head

"More than two months after its release, Thrive is still struggling to command any significant positive attention in mainstream circles. ... by its reliance on conspiracy theories it becomes toxic to the mainstream"

Any Video / Film that was determined UNWORTHY of having a Wiki page will NOT draw a crowd of intellectuals....

Re: Big Gun

So you don't agree that the banks that control the FED, a group of bankers that our president sold out to in 1913, control our elected politicians? CR4P! 'intellectuals' CR$P! We elect people who are then bought. No 'free' energy? This planet is bathed in energy. Solar panel runs heat pump that heats my shop...were they 'free'? NO! Is the energy that heats my shop 'free'? YES! You would do well to waste a bit of your time to watch the video while the FED does more 'quantative easing' and buy some bonds, they seem to think they are a good investment! (about 85 million a month) Fine by me as it drives up gold and silver prices. You should invest in the dollar, it will soon be good for toilet paper. Just how soon? Not sure, you might have to hold them for a while, but I will bet 100 ounces of silver they will be worth less next year. Plant a garden, move away from the city, buy a gun, you may need it to keep the vermin out of your garden. A Wiki approval means what? discussion? 5000 crop circles in England and one that is simular to the plaque that was sent out on the 'explorer' when I was in high school, but with changes, by whom? Why do we not discuss these things?
