Self-powered Backpack

09/09/2005 8:39 AM

Inventor Larry Rome has created a backpack that can be tapped as an energy source. The backpack captures energy from the motion of its contents, which it converts into electricity through an internal electric generator. The backpack, which weighs from 44 to 83 pounds when filled, can consistently produce about 7 watts of energy, enough to power multiple devices at the same time, such as cell phones, global positioning system receivers, and LED headlamps. While the weight may seem high, many first responders in disaster areas wear 80 lb. backpacks that often contain 20 pounds of replacement batteries.

Snack power

The interesting thing is that food has more that 100 times the power of batteries. So a Twinkie has the power of 1000 AA batteries?
