USB Extension Cable

04/30/2013 9:14 PM

As you all know, I'm too lazy to search.

Why can't I buy a 10 foot USB extension cable?

Your credit cards are maxed out?

The local electronics stores have your face on a 'do not admit' list?

You can't remember how to spell USB?

Your wife won't let you?

Google isn't your friend anymore? http://www.google.com/search?q=10+foot+usb+cable&hl=en&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=tW-AUY37JIWi4AOG-oDoDA&sqi=2&ved=0CEAQsxg&biw=1240&bih=606

Re: USB Extension Cable

Look, I wasted 53 minutes of my life trying to buy a 10 foot UFD extension cable today at two different retail outlets. One even said, yes, we have it. They didn't.

I moved to a new office today and need a longer cable.

Now, until I get this cable, I'll have to walk 30 feet to use the common printer.

I make as many as 3 or 4 copies every day.

What to do?

If by "common" you mean "communal", then the answer to printer sharing is not a plait of USB cables but a networked printer. There are adapters for converting any USB printer to work over a network.
Of course, you will still have to walk the distance to pick up the results :(

What we have here is failure to communicate, or more correctly failure to comprehend.

The common printer is shared by everyone, wirelessly, already.

The printer in question is my office printer that is not shared.

One printer, one USB cable, that's it.

The problem was solved yesterday, by moving the printer closer to the PC. No extension cable required, thank you.

Ebay is your friend, alteratively try Newark

USB Cable 3M (10ft)

USB A Plug to Recepticle

You'll have to run a short male to male cable onto the extension cable, couldn't find in the short time I have available a direct Male to male USB cable. Plenty of different gender USB A/B leads

As you know USB has similar distance issues as RS 232.

Re: USB Extension Cable

Are you looking for something greater than 10' in total length?

USB 2.0 limits lengths to 16' because the propagation time for data to go beyond 16' feet in wire starts to disrupt the synchronization of data. Yes, USB 2.0 is that fast.

There is a way around the problem and that is to use a powered USB hub as an extension cable. The hub will allow you to extend the total length of the system because the hub does not violate the timing conventions. Essentially, the distance is subdivided by the hub, which resynchronizes the USB signal.

I have this setup in our lab. You can buy a 10' extension cable, but the cable you plug into it must not exceed 6'. We use a hub at the end of the extension to allow another 16' to our test devices.

Walmart sells 10' extension cables as well as powered USB hubs.

Just order a cable from Walmart on line and pick it up in the store in a day or two.

10' Extension Cable

If your total length is greater than 16' you must add a powered USB hub inbetween.

I went to Walmart tonight.

They didn't have any. Any length.

Can someone bring to my work a 10' ufd extension cord and drop it off? I'll PM my address to you if you can. I'll buy lunch.

Otherwise, I'll have to hike to the printer WAY over there.←

Re: USB Extension Cable

Another reason for the 16' is the I2R losses in the two power conductors on a USB cable.

The original USB spec stipulates a minimum of 4.75 volts at the device end (USB 2.0 and 3.0 allow lower voltages, ie greater losses from the host to the device). It also allows for up to 0.5 amps. That much current through small wires can lead to significant voltage drop at the device end.

USB cable manufacturers allow for the power conductor size to vary from 28 AWG to 20 AWG to accommodate lower losses at longer lengths. I calculate the drop across 16' of 28 AWG with 0.5 Amps through it to be 0.52 volts. At 20 AWG, 16' is only 80mV, but that's a pretty thick cable for a printer! Of the cables that I've cut open, the biggest power conductor was 24 AWG.

The length limit also makes testing USB devices in an RF chamber a little dicey. The particular test lab that I worked with had a 50 ft extension from the table at the center of the lab out to the workbench outside. We placed our host PC there and the device under test inside so as to measure only emissions from the device and not the PC. For our device this was not an issue.

"There is no demand for them sir..... And, every time we get some in they sell out really quickly."

I used to have a boss who was about 6' 4" square: his hands were so big he couldn't use a computer keyboard because the ends of his fingers covered much more than one key. Fortunately he was a really nice bloke otherwise I dread to think what might have happened to the salesman who gave him the above reply when he asked if they had a jumper in his size.

Re: USB Extension Cable

Well, I've decided to order on-line and just wait for the thing to ship.

Interesting, I was not aware that 16' is the practical limit for USB length.

Everything I have at home is wireless and I've always had the luxury of a staff IT person at the jobs I've held over the years, until this one. With a total staff of 9 people, we have to call a contractor when we can't handle the problem.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: USB Extension Cable

Ok Kids,

I'm solving this problem by using a 16x16x16 steel box as a table and putting the printer within reach of my chair and the PC. My printer is 16x16.

I had the steel box left over from a statue exhibit that we did 5 years ago.

The walls are 1/4 inch thick, so I think it can support the printer.

Thanks again for the help.

The green box has negated my need for an extenson cord. I didn't have the green box, to begin with, thus my need for the cord, since my printer was across the room then.

It allowed me to place my printer within 6 feet of the pc, where I can reach it without getting up from my chair.

Re: USB Extension Cable

05/01/2013 5:32 PM

I am shocked that with all these smart people here, nobody gave our friend Lyn the correct solution to his conundrum.

Step 1. Gather 4 normal 3' USB cables (The type given free with almost every usb printer or device)

Step 2. Label each cable A, B,C, and D.

Step 3. Cut small square end off of A and strip wires back, cut both ends off B and C, strip wires back, using the rectangle end cut approximately 20 inches off of D, strip wires back.

Step 4. attach in a twisting motion, all like colors of the various wires together.

Step 5. Using Duck Tape brand duct tape, liberally wrap each splice. Measure total length, once satisfied, wrap entire 10' with duct tape with 1" overlap.

Step 6. Enjoy printer connected with 10' USB cable.

You welcome!

Re: USB Extension Cable

I had your problem and solved it by replacing the potential chain of cables by simply buying a 15 foot USB cable (A male to B male) and using it. It was available locally and the 15 foot cable was cheaper than an extension cord of any length locally. It also has the advantage that the connectors between the regular cable and the extension cable can not become unplugged when I move equipment around. This always happens at the most inconvenient time and the hardest to get to places. (Murphy's Law) Also makes it more difficult for someone to "borrow" the cable for their own use!

When I have the lead-time available I now mail order them from Tiger Direct. Much cheaper but you have to wait a few days.

Good Luck, Old Salt

One of these days I am going to deliver myself of a rant on the proliferation of acronyms -starting with the Rand Corporation and the Polaris submarine. As everyone knows, "USB" is the acronym for "upper sideband".

So what we have here is an HF USB LAN.

The OP has simply failed to properly introduce his computer to the printer.

Years ago I worked on an assembly line building copiers. I was a repairer and worked opposite an inspector who would make up acronyms on the fly. Over time the group of us who had to tolerate the "everyone needs to read my mind" inspector talked with management who then released an "Official Defects Abbreviation List". Sure enough the next day there was a new acronym on an inspection sheet. I marked it NOODAL and sent it back to him. He responded, "NOODAL, what the hell is NOODAL"? I responded, "not on official defects abbreviation list"! He stormed off to complain to his boss who backed me up only making him angrier. What can I say, the guy was a moron!!!
