I Hate Google

05/06/2013 11:55 PM

Is there a better search engine? Google has gotten terrible lately--do a search, and it puts ads on top and bottom of the 10 or so search results.

It finds billions of matches, but most are repetitive. It repeats the same exact entry dozens of times. Yes, you can get rid of those in Advanced, by telling it to ignore certain results, but that's a PITA.

Used to be, you could see 50 or 100 search results at a time, but that feature's gone.

I've used a bunch of different search engines, but Google seems to find more than the rest. It's just that it finds billions of them, shows me dozens of duplicates, and puts them up 10 at a time.

Any suggestions? Oh, I know--I could Google the question!

Why are you getting ads, have you accidentally disabled your internet popup blocker or something?

Best you check your internet and search settings first.

They are Google ads saying "Ads related..."

They appear in the search results, at the top or bottom, sometimes both.

The easiest way to search Google while avoiding the advertising deluge, is to begin your search at:

Google Scholar

http://scholar.google.com

.

You will still encounter links to articles that want payment for full access to a particular bit of research, but even with that it is a vast improvement.

Re: I hate Google

I'm a PR flack, and I send out press releases. I use Google to find out who ran the releases on their web sites. No porn. Google finds the most of all the search engines, but it often tells me dozens of times that a particular magazine ran it.

I'm pretty good at using Google since I've been doing this for years, but lately it's getting annoying for the reasons stated.

I haven't found anything better.

Depending on what I'm searching for, I've found that it's helpful to go directly to "images" after entering a search term. A picture is worth a thousand words, and that method will often get me to where I want to be.

I do exactly the same. You can scan images as you scroll much quicker than recognising texts.

Especially useful when Google is trawling up tons of rubbish.

I do the same. And placing the cursor over the image gives the web site it came from. Which help eliminate a lot bogus searches.

try DuckDuckGo!

I have found it to be as good or better than google, and I don't get caught in the "filter bubble" anymore.

They also claim not to store any of your personal info or sent it to other sites, like google does.

Are you sure it's Google and not your browsers putting the ads on the page. Google does place some of the hits to the search on the page from the other categories(shopping, maps, Images) Also if you go to setting you can place up to 100 results on the page.

Those are Google ads, not browser ads.

Yes, you can select 100 results, but it only works once. Come back to Google for a later search, and the preferences are gone. Used to be that once you set your preferences, they stayed set.

I do agree that the search results returned by Google has gone downhill and they are telling you what you want to search for.

Some time ago, they remove the advance Search Option UNLESS you search their way first.

It's also so difficult to get to the SPAM folder in Google mail. It's not in the first small list. So it seems as if gmail is chasing it's tail when you want another folder. Now to get to the SPAM folder typing "in:SPAM" is a LOT faster.

Search in gmail doesn't search the SPAM folder anymore either. Not sure if you can enable it.

They have control over the Horizontal and the Vertical. They control what your supposed to see and not see.

Go to settings and remove the instant results option, then you will be able to set the number of results to be shown ( I've tried it and it worked).

Re: I Hate Google

I have to agree. Often, several links pointing to the same website. I was recently looking up transistor data, typing in the transistor type number. Many links purportedly providing data were in fact sales - apparently this was the data!!! Sites which did provide data came up even when they did not have data sheets on the type entered. Not helpful, and time wasting. I don't know if the problem is Goole's for using a search engine that is too general. On the plus side, results do come up very quickly.

Regards,

Tony Lee.

If you are using Internet Explorer you can go to 'Tools', 'Turn on pop-up blocker' which might help. Using Chrome works well, just enter your search in the web address field.

Your Problem is not Google. It is the "Ask" toolbar you installed with your Java update, or it is the Yahoo Toolbar you installed through some other update or intentionally. Or it is the Mywebsearch Toolbar etc.

Go into your browser settings and disable all the toolbars and set the search and homepage to use ONLY Google. Then go into you Add Remove Programs and remove any Websearch, WildTangent, Toolbars, Ask, Yahoo and reboot your machine.

Adobe and Oracle both have "optional" installs with their updates. Be careful when clicking on those so that you uncheck the optional stuff.

I do not know what you are using for a browser, but Google is all I use to search with here and have never ever seen a single ad of any kind

Using latest Firefox with the add-on called "Ad Block plus.

with this combo I am totally ad free everywhere.

Like even on U stream when everyone was watching the Eagles the other year, they would complain about the ad's that would interrput the broadcast i never saw a single one.

If you are truly a "Slow Old Poop", (I know I am - been out of college for over 40 years now) then you should appreciate that we have a free search service to replace hundreds of catalogs we used to have to use and could still never find what we were looking for and, hey - It's Free! Quit your belly aching. When they start charging for it, then we can complain. What's that old adage about a gift horse?

Re: I Hate Google

05/08/2013 12:32 PM

Probably none better, but I switched to Ask.com a couple of years ago on principle. When I saw they offered the Ask cookie, "AskEraser" to prevent having your searches stored (theoretically -- note Google's fingers in the pie), I decided to try it. Who knows if it is really working? One can only trust. Prior to that I had tried Scroogle a few times, which purports to accomplish the same thing, but in the interim, it apparently was shut down. Reading about its history lends more fuel to the fire of reasons to suspect Google of outgrowing(?)its motto. You can find online lists of alternate search engines to try. Your mileage may vary from the reviewer's. Scroogle's complaints (about Google's "throttling") also make one question whatever happened to Net Neutrality? Did citizens really win? Or are the rules being ignored? Or being heeded "loosely," open to too much interpretation?

I have noticed that in the last couple of months or so, commercial links seem ordered on Ask.com, whereby, if one is searching for a company web site, that link isn't always the first one listed. An example I just tried is using the terms, Forbes and magazine. Ask doesn't return the magazine's web site as the first link, yet Google does. Score one for Google. This implies that the first link I get (hoover.com) has paid for(?) that front-of-the-line position. I called Ask one time about search results and was told that their algorithm is different from Google. They said best results are obtained by the query being in the form of a question -- not search terms, as one is used to using with Google. Regardless, the Internet clearly isn't what it was 15 years ago and search engines aren't either.

For those who have the time and inclination, the Wiki articles about the history of the Internet and Search Engines are nice reviews of just how much the Internet has evolved. The history of social media is also interesting and pertinent, as it seems to have been a prime idea for use of the Internet. We are a social species, after all.

I would agree on the duplication of hits as an annoyance. Far too many are just repeats -- on any search engine. Searching is a compromise between privacy vs. info. obtained.

As in so many arenas of life, the herd will always have a shepherd. Most of the time we're grazing and don't notice.

Google might be better but Ask has worked well enough for me that I still don't use Google. I find that a bit of patience and willingness to go through more than a page of links usually yields fruitful results.

Look up abine's Do Not Track me. Hardly foolproof/secure, for reasons you can google (yes, that was a deliberate choice of word), but it's sort of amusing. There is no such thing as anonymity - one can blame it on somebody else in the household using the computer, even bury ones searches in bull, but you can't escape.

Posting OT (because it is) and anon (because it isn't, to anybody playing with wood...Trojan..in Troy).

I get rid of all tool bars (I delete them so they don't chew up resources, not just hide them). The biggest annoyance of toolbars is that they use up real estate on my screen.

I got particularly miffed when I upgraded my Adobe Reader application recently and as part of the download, they installed Chrome on my machine without asking if I wanted it and automatically changed my default browser, and so on.

The tirade I emailed back to Adobe would have made a sailor blush.

The Adobe update does ask if you want to install Chrome but the notice & box you need to un-tick appears several seconds after the Adobe update button. If you hit the update button as soon as it appears you accept without seeing the Chrome warning. The cynical side of me wonders if this is deliberate.

Sorry Sir Robin - I had to check this one out, since it claims to combine Google and Yahoo. I tend to take short cuts to get data sheets for various valves/instruments/breakers/fuses/PLC's/etc. by just entering the model number. (easy copy from a parts list spreadsheet) Tried Webcrawler for a Swagelok vlave and got only an E-Bay hit. Went to Google and got an immediate link to the data sheet on the Swagelok site. (note that this site is usually password protected so getting in requires remembering your password and I usually can't) So it's back to Google for me.

Webcrawler used to list which search engine produced each line in their display. I don't see that now, but in my experiences, Webcrawler works just fine.

I'm not defending Webcrawler or trying to dis Google. I simply offered it as an alternative to Google. To each his own. I tried a comparison using a partial part number for a surface mount resistor, CRCW0402: The listings looked very similar. I doubt anyone will be able to read the two graphics below, but suffice it to say, there are many identical hits between the two.

Cheers !

The thing that ticks me off on both Google and Bing is the short memory they have. When they are told to only search UK sites or even more local they come up with say half a dozen answers in that area then revert to endless mixed addresses (mostly US and not even French or Dutch which could possibly be seen as local ) including references to actual towns and cities in other countries. If I am looking for the best price on say a new cooker then the Dead Man's Gulch Cook Shop is no use whatsoever to me. As for the adverts, my guess the money men control the way they are forced upon us.

Wow!!!

This is off topic, but for months I've been wondering why CR4 pages took so incredibly long to load...like, almost to the point that it wasn't worth getting on here.

I use Slimbrowser, and after reading some of the comments on here, I went poking around in "tools".

Long story, short; under adblocker, there was an item that said, "disable adblocker for current site CR4". I did, and everything is running much faster. It feels like Christmas!!!!!!

16.5 I love Google! What else can you expect from a free service? Pesky ads? Ignore them.
