I am a fresh grad and I was wondering , what knowledge (Areas/ typical Software) and skills a communication engineer should posses working in a airport ?

The biggest one would be...."communications"! You have walked into a forum and asked an open ended question expecting a response tailored to your situation, something which you failed to communicate.
When you move onto the next forum why not lead with something like this: I'm graduating with a four year EE degree with a heavy emphasis on digital and RF electronics including topics such as rf propagation, software defined radios, rf and internet based communication theory, secure messaging and encryption systems, multiprocessing and massively parallel switching systems theory, surface to air comms systems, database design, multiple operating systems experience, radar design theory, etc. I'm also a ham radio operator and preparing for the FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (or the equivalent in your country).
No hiring manager expects a newbie to know the exact details of their particular operation, but they will always favor the candidate that has most of the basics required for the position. The above info was garnered from a Systems Engineer that used to work for me and is now employed by a major East coast airport.
