What Can We Make Out of CO2

05/10/2013 9:23 PM

I like the idea of this....

"Green Matter: Replacing oil-based plastics with greenhouse gas-based plastics"

"Proprietary biocatalyst is key

The company has developed a proprietary biocatalyst to convert air and greenhouse gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide, into PHA-based plastics at very high yield. Newlight's conversion technology can synthesize high-performance thermoplastics from a wide range of sources, including methane and/or carbon dioxide from wastewater treatment facilities, landfills, anaerobic digesters, or energy facilities - at scale.

A new PHA
Newlight's Airflex (mPHA), also called AirCarbon, is a family of high-performance thermoplastic resins that, according to the company can be produced as a carbon-negative thermoplastic material, "quantifiably reducing the amount of carbon released into the air in every pound of plastic we make." These PHAs, which are available in various grades, can be used in applications where (impact) polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS, or TPU would traditionally be used. Newlight currently has 12.5 million lb of resin executed under LOI.

"We now have a market-driven tool to capture carbon," said Herrema as he ended. "We've reduced cost and maintained performance. Our product has the potential to compete directly with some major chemically produced polymers. We can change the world. It's here, it's now - and it's happening as we speak.""

Interesting... And some alphabet soup acronyms there.

PHA and mPHA ==> microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates

LOI = Letter of Intent (?)

Also: ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane)

Biodegradable plastics [including polyhydroxyalkanoates?] are generally plant-derived polymers, produced by converting plant sugars into plastic, producing the polymer inside a microorganism (bacteria), or growing the plastic inside the leaves or stalk of corn or other crops.

I believe Europe is further along with this than the U.S.

My girlfriend was visiting some friend in England, and she said that the grocery bags are plant based polymers. And her friend had stored some items in these bags and a short time later it had oxidized and broken down, so shelf life is limited (making it green) but is not meant for long term storage usage.

"What can we make with CO2?"

Hmm, only one thing comes to mind, a frothy malt beverage.

If only we could come up with some sort of machine or such system that would convert CO2 into something more useful like O2.

Maybe even bioengineer it and make it into large facilities like a processing plant or such.

For aesthetics maybe even paint the whole thing in shades of green and add solar panels to it so its solar powered then deploy them all over the world!

Even better- what if we could make these things grow so we don't even have to make them!

But they could get loose in the environment and no one could make a profit off of them after that. It could be the ruin of big business and politics.

Imagine what the anti GMO sect would say about such a thing on the loose.

Problem with O2 tensions on the planet is if we made just a bit too much our naturally occurring forest fires for example would be very difficult to put out...Insurance(property) actuaries would have a dickens of a time trying to figure out rates that would be tenable ...etc...

Just thinking in typed out words really..

Oooh, I like it. " . . . like a processing PLANT or such." (all caps my emphasis )

Trees are other great things we can make out of CO2.

Global warming and the end of mankind.

I mean......cooling.

I mean.....change.

Where in the hell is my gin and tonic and private jet? I've got a meeting with a polar bear.

The last one.

Love the ingenuity of people really..I've been tracking C02 conversion chemistry(based on my paper files collected prior to the much simpler internet search and read what's current technique) since the early 1980's..This and other stories such as this are becoming a reality..Will it be a game changer...In sum all these developments will certainly change the way the chemical/oil industry does business...It will impact how we,as a people,on this planet deal with our formerly known as waste byproducts..It,at the end of the day, seems to be a collective way to better control our negative outputs and really should make the cost of fueling my car and heating my home with oil based fuel oil(kerosene/diesel) much more manageable and quickly...Probably by the middle of this fall oil prices will start to plummet...So in summary money talks and moves change quickly..Note this is private entreprenuership once again leading us out of a sticky situation..But that's another story...

Just typing away thoughts that are happening as the keys fly by..

Is the PHA-based plastic actually biodegradable? It doesn't say that, but maybe I'm missing something in the techno speak. What is the production process, and does the process itself produce some type of waste product?

Re: What Can We Make Out of CO2

Well it depends on the grade of plastic, they make several....

from the website....

"High-Performance.

AirflexTM is available in a variety of functional grades, including replacements for various grades of: polypropylene (homopolymer, glass-filled, and impact co-polymer), polyethylene (HD, LD, and LLD), ABS, high impact polystyrene, PMMA, and TPU. Newlight's Airflex™ resins can be used in extrusion, blown film, cast film, thermoforming, fiber spinning, and injection molding applications.

Biodegradable.
AirflexTM is a naturally biodegradable polyester, and can be compounded with both biodegradable and non-biodegradable formulations according to the durability needs of a given application. *Please check labeling or packaging for grade-specific biodegradability and compostability parameters.

Regeneratively Recyclable.
As a naturally biodegradable plastic made from greenhouse gas, Airflex™ can be manufactured into uniquely recyclable products: products that start, finish, and are recycled as clean, local, cost-effective greenhouse gas.

I agree Tom. Looks like the real thing.

I tried to contact them with a request but the send button would not work for some reason. Maybe they don't deal with Australia jet? I would love to have a closer look at their products and see if we can change over to what they are offering. Looks like it.

SolarEagle is endorsing a good thing here. Well worth supporting!

See what happens, Ky.
