Software Program for Cost Estimation

05/18/2013 2:53 AM

To make cost estimation of the components we manufacture, we generally use Microsoft excel all the times. An assembly drawing will have so many sub assembly drawings and detail drawings. To estimate cost it requires minimum of 1hour by studying the drawings, entering milling, drilling, grinding etc costs.

I was thinking of writing a programme which will have graphical user interface asking the inputs of not only the material cost but also manufacturing, design and inspection cost.

Can anybody suggest me the user friendly language so that I can learn it and develop for doing cost estimations. In that I should be able to use graphical user interface functions also.

I recommend MatLab.

I used a GUI to provide tabulation and tracking of variables in a homemade wind turbine. The setup I had plotted wind speed from an anemometer[m/s] and electricity being being generated [V] simultaneously on the same axes via a DAQ connected using RS-232 cables. This was very helpful in establishing performance characteristics and optimization conditions of blade design/pitch angle etc.

You could similarly play around with the GUI tool to suit your needs. As this video shows, there are many options and possibilities thus extremely customizable.

However, MatLab is an extremely powerful tool and may be overkill for your needs. Also, given the cost of the software perhaps there is a more suitable tool out there for your needs.

What about PDMworks which is used in conjunction with Solidworks? I am aware of its usage in document and Part No control. Perhaps the sub-assemblies could have the costing information you are tracking... Just a thought.

Good Luck.

thank u,I will try matlab now.

i know matlab,i have used it in doing contact analysis using FEM. I know about GUI in that but never used it,actually i was thinking of javascript and all but this didn't flash on my mind.

can u give me some important or common GUI FUNCTIONS IN MATLAB.

What CAD program are you using for design?

Typically, programs like Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor have these functions built in or as an add-on property.

Maybe your CATIA representative might be a resource.

Also, you might try signing up with a CATIA user's forum. I am sure there are other users out there that have the same needs and it would be possible to get an idea what others are using or how they approach the problem.
