Solar Cell Output Becoming Weak

05/19/2013 12:11 AM

Dear my friend i have purchesed Soler cell plate wich havinga capacity

10 watt

19.2v

.08A

but after 2 years its output become week now its generating only8 volt why its is genrating to low voltage or soler plate is repairable

If any other help any body can done i am waitng for that?????????

After 2 years, it may be dirty, fouled or just in the shade.

Is it clean? Dust isn't good. Birds do do, don't they.

Try some "trouble shooting solar cells" on the web.

I have to agree with you on this one. Dirt is most likely the problem. Ed Bagley cleans all his panels monthly for the most efficient use of solar.

If you can take it apart, you may be able to repair it....but first I would cut several pieces of cardboard and place them, one at a time over individual cells, while in the sunlight, to determine which cells, if any, are not producing....if you find some cells that are not generating any voltage,,then examine the connections and test, while covered, for continuity....if you find a bad connection there is a product called "Quick Grid Repair Resin" and it is used to repair the rear window defogger in your car, buy it at the local automotive supply,,,this can be used to repair the connection as it requires no heat...make sure you test for polarity..

It is possible that you have a failed unit. That assumes you have maintained the cell by cleaning it and have no external wiring corrosion on connectors.

Normally, solar cell output drops over time due to degradation of the cell (metal migration in the p-n junction, glass coating degradation, internal contact corrosion), but they can also fail due to internal shorting of cells or open due to thermal stress cracks or mechanical damage. Quality control issues while manufacturing may be another cause.

Normal degradation may account for as much as 20% drop in output over many years, but your situation sounds like the panel has other issues, probably one or more dead cells (every panel contains a collection of many cells wired into an array).

10 watt solar panels have often a plastic cover instead of a hardened glass surface.

I see the plastic become brown and posing a barrier for the sun rays to reach the solar cells.

Measurement with a (high ohmic) digital meter can be very misleading. Best is to measure the amperage with the + and - shorted or loaded with a resistor of a 20-100 Ohms.

All the cells in your panel are in series (probably 36 pieces) and they account for about 0,58 Volts each(open circuit).

Depending on the panel, you can see through the connections sometimes when you put a lot of light behind it. Goes for the 156 X 156 mm (cell) standard. Also cracks in the individual cells might be visible through a magnifier glass.

I guess your 10 Watts panel hasn't been designed for twenty plus years to work.

Many smaller solar panels have a very basic regulator normally mounted inside an enclosure on the rear of the panel. These tend to accumulate moisture over a period of time and begin to corrode the electronics. The result is a drop in output voltage and consequent current.

If it only being used for battery maintenance, and provided the battery is 80Ah or more, you can do away with the regulator and connect the panel directly to the battery.

The output from the panel will be pulled down to battery terminal volts which will gradually rise as the battery charges, there will be no regulation, but the 10w panel output is too small to cause any overcharge on that size battery.

If the battery is smaller, fit a new regulator.

They do make charge controllers for these size panels....

you might want to consider replacement, as the cost of PV units has dropped. Might be econmonical in the long run to replace now rather than try a repair that might only last a few months/weeks!!

Do you know who made the cells, or even more importantly WHERE were they made?

If the answer is China, then they may be suffering from premature aging/lack of quality.....
