Hello Masters

06/07/2013 5:52 AM

I am a student of physics and finally completed my Masters in Applied physics. I am very interested in mechanical parts and gears. Hope to solve many problems with you guys and also hope you will help me.

Thanks

Please tell us how you solved your compressor motor installation problem.

Did you use the VFD, or keep it simple?

Here is a mechanical question for you to see how good you are at theoretical stuff and a cross referencing things to come up with educated guesses.

I recently had the axle break off on our old dozer so in theory assuming it wasn't just age and stress fatigue how much torque did it take to twist the shaft off.

It' 3.5 inch high strength heat treated steel. You fill in the rest with educated assumptions and we will call it close enough.

Show your basic work and reasoning too!

Well he sounded like he might know things so I figure let him prove it by solving a problem I could do in high school with a basic calculator and a metals properties reference book from the shop class.

If he can't do a simple theoretical calculation like this I am just going to have to assume he went to engineering college at NDSU Fargo.

Now relating to my axle I did in fact break one about two weeks ago and it was most likely stress fatigue being the old rattle monster doesn't have enough engine power or low enough gear ratios to get anywhere near what an axle that size should take to twist off.

That and being it uses a torque converter drive and hydraulically shifted two speed automatic transmission there is no clutch to dump either.

I am curious to see what or if he comes up with anything.

Hi mattmro,

Looked at you history (what there is of it). Something to bear in mind in your future dealings with the forum, It would be good to get some contact in addition to the initial question and a bit more detail (make that a lot more detail) for your fellow forum members to go on.

Apart from that welcome to CR4,

John
