Wireless Router Connection: Can LAN be Wireless?

07/02/2007 7:57 AM

Hi,

I have a question about hooking up a wireless router in my dorm. We have 4 rooms each one of us have a separate lan connection. I want to make my LAN connection as wireless. Is it possible to hook up a wireless router or WLAN access point to my standard LAN and use the connection as WLAN.

Also is it possible that all of us in the flat can do the same, with just one WLAN device.

Thanks

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is possible. Normally the LAN would go directly into the LAN card of your desktop or laptop pc. With a wireless router, you simply exchange the connection to the LAN card of your pc to that of the wireless router. However, you would have to buy a USB / PCMCIA wireless adaptor for your pc in order to receive the transmition.

The software supplied in the wirelss router package should help you set the connectivity from your computer.

Personally, I have good experiences from Belkin and also from Linksys wireless routers. The former being strictly a wireless router while the later is a wireless ADSL modem and router. I would say the Linksys has better configuration options though in the bundled software.

Hope this helps.

You should be able to get just about anything that worked without the router working over wireless. Some stuff doesn't because of "double NATing" which is with the addition of your router you might be behind one too many for a service or program to cut through it all properly. Sometimes ISPs do this on purpose to give a headache to people trying to avoid paying for a static IP and a proper business internet connection.

If each of you have a separate LAN, why do you want to set up a WLAN? Yes, it is easy to do with Lynksis, NetGear or other wireless router equipment. In fact you can find this cheap stuff at Walmart. You can make the WLAN encrypted or unencrypted. This means you can make it password protected only for the use of any one you want to log-in to your WLAN or open it up for everyone. Buy a simple D-Link USB transceiver and you are connected. My question remains, why? The wired LAN connection will be at or near 100mps, while the wireless may go no faster than 50mps.

"The wired LAN connection will be at or near 100mps, while the wireless may go no faster than 50mps."

It's not always true. I am using a Linksys wireless-N adapter on my notebook computer and connecting to our wireless-N network at times up to 130 Mbps.

You must be sitting on top of or near to the AP. We've got a Linksys 802.11N and from 20 feet away I only get 75% signal strength but we're upstairs from a machine shop and wood shop so there's probably significant interference at times.

Yeah you're right.

Positioning and orientation plays a significant role in the signal strength transmission and reception.

We also have set-up our local hotspot (using Linksys WRT54G wireless router powered by coova) and at a distance of 30 ft I can receive a very good signal at times despite 2 wooden wall partitions. The router is mounted 10 ft above outside our office.
Before it was set-up as a wireless sub-network located in a corner 3 ft. above floor and we don't get good signal even at a 20 ft distance with 3 wall partitions between.

There is also the difference in reception between adapters and brand manufacture.

My Motorola Shelf service tech said to : take two cantennas and purchase a
wireless router with bridging capability you should be able to align both
cantanna with each other and pipe the rf straight into the other router
acting as a bridge to your computer. This is called point to point
instead of all over the place.

These are pretty Cheap on E-bay, basically a pringles looking can that shoot a narrow beam instead of broadcasting everywhere like an antenna..

Buy a wireless route. Use WPA encryption with long random password. Don't use WEP, it can be crack in 2 minute.

Its best to get router and adaptor with same brand if possible. Better compatibility. The router will have all the instruction you need.

ok i managed to setup a WLAN network that hops through my standard LAN settings. Is just setting up the WEP key safe or is there other options for setting up more security?
