Terrific Article on Four Very Different Desalination Technologies

02/24/2015 12:31 PM

Ed Brown has written a terrific article on four very different desalination projects. They all have certain commonalities even though they differ in technical sophistication. Have a read by following the link here. Have a read and let me know your thoughts on the article and on desalination as a potential solution to quenching the world's thirst.

Am I missing something here, "The Kotri plant is self-contained and produces 1.5 milliliter (mL) per year, enough to provide for the needs of about 1,000 families."

Thanks for the note. I've updated the article to read that the plant produces 600 liters of water per six-hour day.

What percent of the total cost to operate, for systems that require pumped saltwater, is the cost to operate and maintain saltwater pumps?

I think the bigger question is, what is the cost per gallon to produce this water and who will pay?

Maybe it's time to look at investing in water instead of oil.

When water gets hard enough to come by, they can inject oil (with some secret solvents mixed in) to take advantage of the water shales, which will be stuffed full of crude water from having fracked out the oil beforehand. This will give tcmtech a fall-back position when oil drops to US$10/bbl and water rises to US$11/bbl. O Brave New World!

With designer waters at $6.00/ liter, and regular old bottled water at $1.50 / liter, water is already more expensive than gas, and the Refining process is much less cost intensive...
