Solar Panels

Cadmium Telluride Solar cells are being installed in 550 MW US installation. How does it compare with Crystaline Silicon in terms of efficiency, space, life,Conversion in low intensity sunlight etc.?

I would ask that question before I install it.

Ask the installer or the vendor. It will be part of the marketing material.

Is this your installation or just interest on your part?

I read an article in which it mentioned 550 MW, 3800 Acres in Govt desert Land in Arizona. 100/120 W per panel. Since i have heard about it first time, so thought of getting some knowledge on it. not in business and retired person. so you can reply.

"Cadmium is one of the top 6 deadliest and toxic materials known"

CdTe is less efficient but lower cost when compared to silicon based technology.

Many thanks. Any price comparison? Only it may be possible in desert, otherwise land will be costly. In India, there is plan for Panels over irrigation canals. Cooler, Less evaporation of water, land area not taken.

.....and they conceal the things that are floating in there too. Good land use solution.

I did see that quote in your second link, but I don't believe it!

I've handled quite a few cadmium plated items over the years, and I'm still quite alive... I do have some allergy problems, and its conceivable that they my have been exacerbated by my exposure to cadmium, or mercury, or asbestos, or lead, or oak trees...

I looked at several lists of the most toxic substances, and none of them had cadmium anywhere near the top.

Also, these photocells don't contain elemental cadmium, but compounds; specifically cadmium sulphide and cadmium telluride. While you'd be in big trouble if you tried to ingest a piece of pure sodium, you would be in trouble if you didn't regularly ingest sodium chloride..

Cadmium is surely toxic. But its inhalation in fume form is harmful. Generally Cadmium coated items, does not cause any harm.

Thank you for pointing out my lack due diligence. I will try to be a little more thorough.

My single sourcing of information is not a good idea.
