The last rose of summer. That's what Jacques Passino of Ford
racing fame called the Boss 302. "the engine and the car did more than we could
have expected it to do It was a winner, it was a good car, a good street
machine. But I guess you could call it the last rose of summer, because right
after that, everything died."
By any measure, the Boss 302 was a success. It accomplished
for Ford about everything they asked of it. It won on the Trans-Am circuit, and
on the street it improved the performance image of the Mustang. But the days of
the high-performance production car, specially produced to make a car eligible
for racing, were ending for Ford Motor Company. With the Boss, Ford left with a
winner."
