Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em?

Posted July 08, 2010 7:52 AM

The biggest winners at the 2010 World Cup seem to have been plastics manufacturers: makers of vuvuzelas and their foils - plastic ear plugs. With everyone except the South African teams and fans complaining, should the instruments have been banned?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plastics & Resins, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plastics & Resins today.

With everyone except the South African teams and fans complaining...

Who else watches soccer aside from the teams and the fans?

I think that for a couple of months, if you truly want to watch soccer (or football) you can listen to an intermittent noise that is annoying. This seems to be particular to only this years World Cup. If it becomes a World Cup tradition, then I definitely think that precautions should be taken to assure the safety of others. There has been concerns over health with regard to vuvuzelas; mainly that they can cause hearing loss and spread disease more effectively than coughing or yelling.

Various future sporting events have already started banning vuvuzelas. I believe that banning vuvuzelas may be necessary if they can't find a way to make it safer for the spectators if people decide to use them.

From a SA perspective, there have in the past been a few "vuvuzelas", but mostly traditional horns like Kudu or Ox horns and the odd bugle or trumpet at matches. The current mass use of them has been "marketed" along with the world cup build-up.

No, not all of us enjoy the racket they make. For my part, they are the prime reason I never went to a single match. Friends who have been, all complained about the huge noise despite earplugs. Each to his own. Many South Africans would support the outright ban of the vuvuzela and any other instrument/contraption that puts out excessive noises.

Yes, bann that terrible thing. It's only designed to make a blatent noise. Nothing worse than a taxi full of these things going off at 10:00pm through a quite residential area, being there and heard it. For me , there's nothing better than the verbal chanting for your team, gets the spirits up and at least the players know what team you support instead of a mindless drone.

Vuvuzela! Senseless noise made on a piece of scrap plastic by a brainless person.
