Dawn of the OLED Age?

Posted December 29, 2010 9:00 AM by Steve Melito

"In 2011 we will all experience the decisive breakthrough of OLED technology in displays and lighting," says Erich Strasser of OLED-display-net, an online portal about organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). By the middle of next year, Strasser claims, "the lifespan of the OLEDs will double, and contrast and colours will improve significantly."

Already, OLEDs come in some Nokia and Samsung smartphones. In 2011, OLED TVs will begin to become available, too. Penetration of the consumer electronics market isn't where the Age of OLEDs will end, however. According to Strasser, organic light emitting diodes also have a future in automotive electronics, as a source of light for instrument panels.

Will the year 2011 mark the dawn of the OLED age?

The 'OLED Age' has been dawning now for about 10 years. They are finding their niche -- which is a pretty big niche -- but other technologies have broader advantages which will keep OLEDs to a smaller fraction of the overall display market.

So, wake me up when OLED breakfast is ready.

Don't OLED colors fade with time and UV exposure? They are dye based are they not? That does not strike me as a good long term display technology.
