Who's Your Person of the Year?

Posted December 26, 2010 7:00 AM

Time magazine has named Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, as its Person of the Year. Zuckerberg certainly has reshaped the Internet landscape for millions of people and has earned billions of dollars doing it. Do you agree with Time's choice, or did you have someone else in mind who has earned the position? Would you prefer to see more scientists and engineers in the final list? Or, is the accolade mostly about fame, or notoriety?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Industrial Processing Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Industrial Processing Equipment today.

My vote for Man-of-the-Year goes to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. He appears to me to be the most honest, shrewd and tough politician I've seen in a long time. In his efforts to bring some common sense and fiscal responsibility to that state, he is willing to battle all of the big, powerful special-interest groups. So far he has been winning. I hope he keeps up the good work.

On the flip side, my 'Unperson-of-the-Year' goes to soon-to-be-former U.S. Senator Arlen Specter. His recent farewell speech was probably the most self-serving, angry, bitter, and perverse bunch of 'sour grapes' I've ever seen. Good riddance.

Julian Assange is the one for me.

"For his efforts, we've awarded Assange with an international arrest warrant, public disgrace, humiliation, and a pending indictment for the United States Department of Justice. We've awarded Zuckerberg with billions of dollars and a hall pass to raid our privacy. What a world — especially to be in Person of the Year in."

We should have a ...

Manufacturing; Who's Your Person of the Year? I think that would be more appropriate question for the Industrial Processing Equipment discussion area.

If nominating person of the year for MANUCTURING, I vote for Joel Leonard. (The "Maintenance Evangelist")

Julian Assange should have been Man of the Year but I'm afraid that Time bowed to the repressive political pressure in the U.S. Far too much time elapsed between Ellsberg's leak of the Pentagon Papers and Wikileaks. Assange provided a platform for leaks and whistleblowers that is encouraging the release of information that may lead to greater government and corporate transparency which could save many lives through the prevention of lie based wars. This, I feel, was a better contribution to the advance of the human condition than a social networking site, however profitable.

Don't forget, the CIA has its motto inscribed in stone just inside the front door : "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

Shouldn't that be 'cynical' instead?

Julian should be rewarded for showing how vulnerable "our" security is. But he is hunted like some mad dog. Now that is ironic, me thinks, Ky.
