This Home-Built EV Beat a Tesla Roadster

Posted February 04, 2011 9:00 AM by CarDomain

The spectacle of this-or-that electric vehicle (EV) slingshotting past a brutishly overpowered supercar in the quarter-mile has become commonplace. It's all about that instantly-available torque, which seems to embarrass the heck out of raw horsepower (hp) every time.

But what about pitting a Tesla roadster, which supposedly has that going for it, against a converted BMW E30 built with off-the-shelf parts? Mate Rimac of Croatia, creator of this lime-green BMW EV, decided to put it to the test. The car does 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 3.3 seconds, packs 900 hp, and is allegedly capable of a 175-mph top speed.

Follow the jump to find the extremely hokey video of the decisive street race, followed by a more slickly-produced piece showing the E30 going up against a variety of exotic and oddball rides at a Croatian dragstrip.
