Examining and counting cells can be difficult in environments outside the lab. This is due mainly to the fact that flow cytometers, the device used for such analysis, are bulky and expensive. Now, however, thanks to scientists at UCLA, the only thing necessary for reliable flow cytometry is a cell phone and $5. That price tag covers necessities such as a lens, color filter, LEDs, and batteries. The cell phone, meanwhile, uses an optofluidic platform to integrate imaging cytometry and fluorescent microscopy. What do you think of this system?
