What Kind of Switches for Appliances?

Appliances still come with all kinds of switches to control and program them. The latest have touchscreens similar to smartphones. How important is that to you when purchasing an appliance? Are other criteria, like energy savings, more important?

I want my appliances to be simple and reliable. no high tech crap that dies the first time there is a spike on the power line. washing machines used to last 20 years, these days they are lucky to last 5. If it has anything more complicated than a mechanical timer, I ain't buying it.

What I want in an appliance or any other item for that matter, is a combination of price, efficiency, longevity and esthetic's. All of these qualities need to be addressed in such a way that the lifespan of the item matches the natural progression of technology. That way my items stay functional, as long as they are current.
