Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Mercedes-Benz Cracks Down on Illegal 300-SL Replica Bodies

Posted March 27, 2012 9:00 AM by dstrohl

Mercedes-Benz Classic in Germany has destroyed a fiberglass 300 SL replica body seized by customs officials after courts ruled that it is not legal to market this body shape, which is trademarked by Daimler AG; this was recently confirmed by the Stuttgart regional court in a 2010 case (no. 17 O 304/10).

The body shape of the W 198 series gullwing Coupe is considered a work of applied art, and has been under copyright protection for decades. Therefore, it's determined that anyone building, offering or selling replicas of the vehicle is violating the automaker's rights, even if those replicas don't incorporate the logos or trademarks of Daimler AG.

Do you think it would fit on one of those old air-cooled V-dub chassis? Those were popular kit car underpinnings for many decades.

From the Benz hiome office.." ...we aren't going to make those so nobody else should be either!"

Like anyone with half a clue won't be able to tell a fake from the real thing.

I'm calling BS! Next thing you know I won't be able to sell my Fuego bodies.

Take a look at Dynacornclassicbodies.com to see how aftermarket and manufacturer have been able to work to please both sides of the copywrite issue and provide a quality product to the public.
