Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Hemmings Find of the Day – 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

Posted October 31, 2012 9:00 AM by dstrohl

On most Chevrolets, you have to take the owner's word (and all the previous owners' words) that the car is what it's claimed to be - GM has yet to locate its build records for American-built cars. GM of Canada, however, retained its build records, so it's a simple matter to document this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle convertible for sale on Hemmings.com as a true SS396 car, ordered as seen here.

In the mid 70s I had one of these in hard top/vinyl with the three speed auto. 80% of the weight was on the front tires. Could not drive it in the wintertime in northern Michigan. Put it in gear and the tires would spin. I got pulled over twice because a cop thought it had no mufflers until they looked under it. Trunk rusted out along with the hood spring mounts and the bottom of the doors. My brother had a 69 lemans custom S with the factory six pack on a 350 that was much quicker.

The new cars of today just don't stack up in the beauty department against these old cars. IMHO, and I'm biased, Mustangs of that era are the King.

How could you NOT fall in love with it? Hit the gas and you're forced to use some skill to keep it out of the rhubarb. Photo is courtesy of a random internet search.
