Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Ghostbusters Fans Launch Campaign to Save Ecto 1a from the Crusher

Posted October 24, 2013 8:00 AM by dstrohl

With seemingly every 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance in private hands turned into a Ghostbusters Ecto 1 clone (along with more white station wagons and ambulances of various makes and models than anybody can count), it's hard to believe that one of the three cars used in the filming of the Ghostbusters movies faces a date with the crusher. A group of Ghostbusters fans, however, have launched an effort to intervene and save the car known as Ecto 1a.

Read about the Ecto 1 preservation efforts on Hemmings.

I find this odd to be a news story. I presume that the owner of this movie memorabilia would entertain selling this instead of crushing it. Make them an offer. Just remember, they own it now. If they wish to crush it, they will.

Since it is so heavily trashed, Sony probably did not think anyone would want it. There are two others after all.

Clearly people want it, so they should auction it. However, the photo of the current condition shows that the people who want it may not exactly understand what the true condition is. It's easy to sign a petition, it's hard to buy a total rusted out piece of junk that is missing all kinds of parts and has a rotted interior and then actually restore it.

However, there are those who would.

How appropriate this thing is all beat up.

"Everybody can relax, I found the car. Needs some suspension work and shocks... and brakes, brake pads, linings, steering box, transmission, rear end." "How much?" "Only $4,800 (roughly $10,805 today). Maybe new rings, also mufflers, a little wiring."
