Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

De Lorean DMC-12 Sells for $77,000, But is This Really an Auction Record?

In March of this year, a 1981 De Lorean crossed the stage at Coys Spring Classic auction in London, England, selling for an undisclosed but record-setting price, at least according to the auction firm's press releases. Later, when the sale's full results were published, it was revealed that the De Lorean sold for £46,600 (then the equivalent of $77,449), which may or may not be a world record for a De Lorean sold at auction, depending upon perspective.

The highest price paid at auction for any De Lorean model, at least as far as we've been able to establish, was the $544,200 paid for a heavily modified De Lorean that appeared on-screen in Back to the Future III, sold by Profiles in History in December 2011.

That car was featured on a UK TV programme called 'For the Love of Cars' and, auctioned at Coys along with five other cars:-

I wonder what one of the gold plate versions would fetch.

The programme is based around the restoration of classic cars. Well worth a watch, if you're into that sort of thing.

Yes, but it had hidden compartments for Nose Candy.
