Honda has been regarded as one of the most reliable and most innovative brands for a long time, which has obviously helped make it one of the world's best-selling brands. But, this is also what makes it a highly desirable target for car thieves, who are always looking for vehicles that are in high demand. Vehicles made by this Japanese manufacturer have been the prime target for thieves lately, with the Accord, one of it's most popular models, topping the list of most stolen cars for a couple of years in a row.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a non-profit organization, comprised of insurance companies, that focuses on motor vehicle theft, as well as LoJack, the company that manufactures vehicle tracking systems, compiled lists of the most stolen vehicles in the US in 2013, using statistics from police reports and insurance claims. For the fifth time in a row, LoJack's list was topped by the Honda Accord, which is the case with the NICB's list, as well.
According to LoJack, the Accord is followed by another Honda model - the Civic, with the Toyota Camry, the Toyota Corolla, and the Chevrolet Silverado, as one of the few American-made cars that are on this list, rounding out the top five spots. There are a lot of reasons why the Accord is so high in the stolen car rankings. For one thing, it's one of the best-selling cars in the country, which means that the demand for it is pretty high, so thieves can easily find customers for it. The fact that there are so many Accords currently in use also means that there is a constant need for spare parts, and spare parts are another reason why thieves steal cars, in addition to reselling entire vehicles. What's more, the Accord is known as a highly-durable and reliable car, and these are some of the most important attributes that consumers want in a motor vehicle. It also has a high resale value, so thieves can resell it for a pretty good price.
As far as what vehicle types rank highest with car thieves, the NICB says (PDF) that compact crossovers have been by far the most popular target for them in the past three years, followed by large crossovers, and mid-size crossovers. This clearly confirms that crossovers and SUVs are America's favorite vehicles. The top three spots on the list of most stolen crossovers and SUVs are occupied by Ford models. The list is topped by the Escape, followed by the Ford Edge and the Ford Explorer.
LoJack also compiled a list of the states with the most stolen vehicles, revealing that California is the state where most vehicles were stolen in 2013, which comes as no surprise, considering that it's the most populous state, and it's the state with more registered vehicles in the whole country, with over 25 million. California is followed by another big state, Texas, with Florida, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Arizona, Georgia, and Washington completing the top ten list.
