Things to Come for the Internet of Things

What exactly is the Internet of Things (IoT)? This IHS Engineering 360 article, the first of a four-part series, is an effort to clarify the concept, for example distinguishing it from Machine to Machine (M2M) communications. M2M provides a backbone for the interconnection of devices, and has by now been under way for about 20 years. A major problem for taking it to the next level, however, is that plant-floor devices are linked by different proprietary networks. According to the article, the solution is to establish Industrial Ethernet as a common open source network that could connect all of the automated systems in the factory and office systems as well.
