Mercedes-Benz F 015 Driverless Car Gives Us a Taste of the Future of Automotive Technology

Autonomous cars may be a few years away from becoming commercially available, but automakers are racing to develop working concepts of vehicles that can drive themselves, so that they can be in a better position to establish leadership in the future driverless car market. One of the latest manufacturers to join the race toward driverless cars is Mercedes-Benz, unveiling the F 015 concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this week. The German car maker showcased the self-driving car concept dubbed "Luxury in Motion", offering a glimpse into the future of the automobile.

The F 015 Luxury in Motion is imagined as an eco-friendly, zero-emission vehicle, accomplished through the use of lightweight materials and the elimination of the conventional internal combustion engine. The body is largely made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, with some components made of aluminum and high-strength steel, which has helped cut the car's weight by 40%, as compared to a similarly-sized conventional vehicle. In addition to body panels and interior components, the ultra light carbon fiber material was also used to build the tanks where the hydrogen, which will power the car, will be stored.

As far as the powertrain is concerned, the company said that the F 015 will be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, and will also have a battery pack that will provide additional power when needed. A pair of electric motors mounted near the rear wheels will deliver 272 horsepower, and the car will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in just under 7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 125 mph.

The autonomous driving technology that allows the F 015 to drive and park by itself is surely amazing, but the car's interior is what sets it apart from other driverless car concepts. It has a pretty futuristic-looking cabin, with all the amenities that self-driving cars can offer. For starters, the cabin was designed in a way that resembles a lounge, with four chairs that can rotate in all directions, so passengers can face each other while traveling. There are several screens inside the car, that allow passengers to control various vehicle systems, including navigation, air conditioning, and entertainment, through voice controls, or even hand gestures - a feature that is not expected to be implemented in production cars anytime soon, though. It is a WiFi hotspot, so occupants can stay connected to the outside world at all times.

The doors design is also extraordinary. They open 90 degrees, and there is no B-pillar, leaving a nice open space between the A and C pillars. On the outside, Mercedes has put one pretty innovative and useful feature with road safety in mind. There is one LED screen on both ends of the car, that change color depending on the driving mode at any given moment. When the driver is in control of the vehicle, the screens are white, turning blue when autonomous driving mode is activated.

The F 015 is just a concept at the moment, and there are no guarantees that anything similar to it will ever be available for purchase, but it does give us an insight into how automakers are envisioning the future of the car and how automotive technology might be developing over the next couple of years.

Purchase? You don't get it, do you? With driverless cars, there will no longer be any need to actually own one privately any more.

If it's a Merc, the battery will go flat and it will lock itself out
