Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Deliveries of Retro California Black Plates Stamped from Original Molds to Begin Soon

Posted June 30, 2015 10:00 AM by dstrohl

When California's DMV announced that, should the Legacy Plate Program succeed in bringing back the state's iconic black plates, many feared that the plates would simply be featureless flat plates with screenprinted digits. As it turns out, the plates, which will begin shipping to California car owners within the month, will instead be stamped using the original molds.

"The molds were just sitting there in Folsom prison," said Aaron Moreno, the legislative director for California Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who introduced the bill that made the plates possible. "And when the people at the prison heard we were trying to get this program started, they dusted the molds off and saw that they could still be used."

Iconic California plates are back on the freeways in the traffic jams.

Is the term "molds" incorrect?

Shouldn't it be a die or stamp?

"Die(s)" would be correct; "dice" would not be the plural in this case.

SO! Florida had a black plate in 1967, hardly "Iconinc".

Maybe ironic...
