New Structures for Additive Manufacturing

Most design software, one could argue, has been fashioned to help engineers do what they've always done, only faster. That tradition typically involves starting with external part shapes like circles and rectangles, says Desktop Engineering's Kenneth Wong. Now, innovative software based on designing with internal microstructures, he suggests, may change both starting point and ending point to create products engineers have never before been able to consider. Among the new tools is Autodesk Within, an optimization engine that automatically generates variable-density lattice structures that are much lighter than traditional components and are easier to 3D print.
