Tomorrow's Labs Today

A New Year dawns and laboratories look toward the future, whether floating in space or rooted on Earth. In Germany, academics and business leaders develop tomorrow's interdisciplinarySmartLab concept that combines robotic automation, advanced information technology, human-machine interaction, and improved equipment communication. Other labs incorporate 3D printing technology, new data recording and analysis capabilities such as the Cloud. They face new challenges such as personalized medicine and gene editing techniques, while struggling against a dearth of workers and negative public perceptions. Still, not everything has changed. Edison's lab-of-the-future featured multiple disciplines - chemical processing and machine shop - and workers operated in an open-area, collaborative lab environment.
