Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Bureau of Land Management Investigating Bonneville Salt Flats Vandals

Pathfinder Tags: Bonneville racing salt flats Utah

A group of Canadians who caused outrage last month after entering restricted spaces at Yellowstone have come under fire again after a stunt of theirs – posted to social media – left the Bonneville Salt Flats damaged.

The stunt, which involved members of the High on Life SundayFundayz group wakeboarding behind a six-wheeled RV on the flooded salt flats, took place in March, according to time stamps on photos uploaded to the group’s Facebook page. An accompanying video later appeared on the group’s Twitter feed and on Vine and asked viewers whether they’d try something similar.

Four members of the group – on a cross-country road trip to promote a Vancouver-based clothing brand – were later spotted by tourists and on their own social media channels leaving a designated boardwalk to get close-up shots of themselves at Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic Spring.

Sadly, there seems to be little recourse for damage caused to the oversensitive Utah salt flats.

How do you damage a salt flat? Looks like fun.

Bonneville has been getting so much rain due to the climate change drought that they have not been able to hold the races anyways.

Now on the other hand, going off the boardwalks at Yellowstone can get you killed. Easily. I would just chalk one up to Darwin there.

Well, think about it for a moment. What's the battle cry of most every enviro conservative that has ever existed?

"We are setting this land aside for future generations to enjoy."

Well given it was past generations who put that land aside I and others are now one of those "future generations" and many of us want to go out and enjoy that land dammit!

They put it there for us to enjoy and did not specify which generation or how it should be enjoyed, just that some undefined future generation should enjoy it in some undefined way.

Hate to poke sticks at a lost cause, but attempting to maintain the status quo forever IS a lost cause.

It sounds like the loss of salt from Bonneville is a natural process, leaching of salt into the soil over time. Any time you pit yourself against any change of any sort, you commit yourself to an exponential requirement of energy and money to oppose entropy.

I suppose the next act in this is to bus in salt from high salt neighborhoods with appropriate administrative overhead, plenty of hired bureaucrats, enforcers and appropriate laws, restrictions and regulations to make the salt stick around. Probably have to set up shoe washing stations to keep folks from tracking salt off the flats.

"It sounds like the loss of salt from Bonneville is a natural process, leaching of salt into the soil over time."

JP, you're only looking at half the system. The salt leaches into the soil over time, AND, rainwater washes the salt from the soil onto the Salt Flats over time. After a while, the system reaches equilibrium.

What has changed the equilibrium has been the BLM allowing Potash mining in the local area, and allowing the 'waste salt' from the potash mining to be sold off and carted away, removing it from the Salt Flats system. If the BLM forbids the sale of 'waste salt,' or denies the licenses to mine Potash, then the Salt Flats will stop degrading, nd may even start recovering.

Apparently they don't mind alienating "most of America" if it raises their product awareness with their target demographic: Thrill-seeking assholes who want to trash Nature for kicks.

Perhaps we need a new directive for the National Parks: Anyone wearing clothing with the logo of the High On Life company is to be denied entry, on the grounds that supporting that company is evidence of Indent to Damage the Park.

You'd be surprised. The last post the organization did was on May 31, and their page has been silent since then. I guess they realized another apology message would only be met with derision; "You said you were sorry and 'it won't happen again' LAST time, why should we believe you now?" Also, their store page, which used to have a "We'll be back soon" placeholder message, is now completely 404. Kind of hard to make money on The Merch if there's to table to sell it from.

"Mass Social Media Trolling" has struck again, only this time, it smote someone who deserved it for once.

The 'future generations' WERE enjoying it. the Salt Flats were used for speed trials. And as far as I can tell, It was open for public use. You might have had to pay a small fee to get your 'take-a-turn' ticket, but considering all the people out there taking care of safety and logistics, it only seemed fair that they get compensated for their time and effort.

You can 'enjoy' a forest by walking down the nature hike trail and observing the beauty around you. You don't need to take a dirt bike and do donuts in a pristine clearing, tearing up the soil and leaving nothing but a muddy pit for the hikers behind you.

Ah, but we have found a use:

You, along with other valued members, help to keep the 'moron population' here low. Anyone who storms off in a cloud of - what are the kids on the interwebs galling it these days? Ah yes, 'butthurt.' - in a cloud of 'butthurt' from your insightful sarcasm over their stupid question is not the sort of person who would make a good member of CR4, nor would they understand and appreciate the help we forum members could give, assuming their question is even coherent enough to answer.

Re: Bureau of Land Management Investigating Bonneville Salt Flats Vandals

We have not been able to race on the salt flats for several years because the salt crust has gotten so thin that the cars will break through the salt surface. This was caused by the potash mining, one of the waste products of potash mining is salt waste, also sold off and not returned to the flats. These people damaged the surface with their oversized motorhome on areas where they should not have been when it was wet. Now the salt surface is cracked and will have to be repaired by putting salt on the surface and spreading it out hopefully to a hard pack that can sustain high speed trials without breaking through the surface. Some of the vehicles produce down-force in the several thousands of pounds range and some even more. Nothing like going 200-300 MPH and breaking through the surface, its like hitting a brick wall or letting out the parachute at full throttle and it can toss a car over on its top or side to really give you a (PUCKER FACTOR) of 12 on a 1-10 scale. I am not even considering going back to Bonneville until the BLM decides what it is going to do about the surface since they are the ones selling the potash and salt and don't have a care in the world about the history of racing there. A lot of the big name racers with sponsors are going to Australia, most of the little guys are looking to Ohio for this year on concrete runways at the old DHL air strip.

"...to really give you a (PUCKER FACTOR) of 12 on a 1-10 scale."

I know this is a high factor, but it's hard to get a real feel for HOW high it is. I'm basing it on the reference of PF 10 = "You need a proctologist to recover the pants/jumpsuit you were wearing at the time of the Event." Where would 12 be on that chart? as 10, but substitute 'skin' for 'pants/jumpsuit'? total body inversion ("you have puckered yourself inside out")? The mind boggles trying to find a comparison.

Believe me when I say this it takes several days to come down off an adrenalin rush from an incident like that. You only have to get upside down going 200+ to realize what your entire life can mean to you, in the here and now and in the future. It really make you take stock in the things that really matter to you, like family and friends. Now the guy that has an incident and crawls out and wants to get right back into another car is the one that scares me, as I feel like he has a death wish and I want no part of the party he is headed for. No matter how you stack it up it takes a while to regain your composure and get your head back into the game. Believe me it takes a lot out of you to just crawl back into a car and start the engine after an accident of those perportions. It just isn't something you shake off in a few minutes or hours.

Personally, I'd consider anything at or above PF 8 ("You need a proctologist to recover your underwear, but your outerwear is intact.") to be a once-in-a-lifetime Event, as in; "I'm sorry, but I don't think I CAN get back on that horse and ride again."

Then again, I'm not a 'test pilot' type, so I prefer my life to stay generally around PF 0-2 with occasional spikes of up to 4-5, mainly on days I'm hitting the thrill rides at the amusement park. (Haunted houses only rate a 1-3 at most for me; jump scares don't phase me, and for entertainment, I need to bring a 'screamer' along to torment. Yes, when it comes to haunted attractions, a have more in common with the 'ghouls' than the fellow guests.)

(Although there was that one haunted house I went to a few years ago that did cause a spike of 4 in one room, and I'm still not sure why. The room was stark white, lit by strobes, with the ghouls dressed in white 'zetta suits' (Those head-to-toe 'body socks' like a person would wear to be invisible on a green-screen set). The walls and ceiling were at odd angles, but the floor was level. As I said, I don't know why, but that room just creeped me out.

Lets invite them to Letchworth State Park in western NY, and let them go over the falls like that family did last week when they ventured off the legal trails. That'll teach them a thing or two.

I'm not an overly violent person, but I think we've all had enough of this, these Canadians are walking all over us and it's time we did something about it.

It's time to INVADE CANADA!

We'll send in one squad of Army recruits and two Boy Scout troops to force their way through the Apologizing Masses and take over the capitol, assuming anyone in America can figure out where that is up there.

No, the topic was flattened by the High on Life vandals and finished off by the maniac North Dakota tire burner.

That will be inconvenient when Quebec becomes the 51st state. They we'd have to get them to pay to take the fence down.

Politics and economics are global and local. It only depends on where you draw the lines.

If I were doing a fence, it would have to go down and around the DosEquis brewery. MINE!!

If there's a good Canadian brewery, MINE TOO!!

BTW, my feeling is we either enforce the immigration laws or throw the borders wide open. Anything else has too much hypocrisy for my taste.

Maybe the time of high speed driving on the salt flats is over, and the time of salt flat skiing has just begun...
