If college was your first plan, but now it’s not, you need an alternative plan. The difference between low wages and a good paying career is having a plan.

“People who get the best options, the best money, the best jobs- have a plan. What’s your plan, if the college plan doesn’t come through?”

  • Hundreds of jobs in your hometown that employers want to see filled with local talent.
  • The best possible job for you should match your skills and your interests
  • Careers with a future
  • Let you grow you pay quickly based on your performance

Here are 3 career planning options that give you “Home Field Advantage” discussed in the video.

Alternate Career Plan #1 Direct to Work

Alternate Career Plan #2 Apprenticeship

Alternate Career Plan #3 Military Service

Thanks to PMPA Member Company Vanamatic Company and Ohio Means Jobs for the video and wise career counsel.

#3 gets you #1 and #2 plus sets you up for college later if you want.

A Marine recruiter came to our house yesterday to talk to our 17 YO.

He quit school at the start of senior year and got his GED.

I'd sign him up right now, but the wife is afraid of the insanity happening in the Middle East.

If you wait until there is no insanity anywhere in the world to sign up for U.S. military service, that may be a long wait:

Some insanity going on somewhere pretty much all of the time.

Air Force and Navy are less likely to be riding patrols in less than friendly territories. As an expeditionary force, the Marines are the tip of the spear. Army to a lesser degree unless you like the spec ops world.

(In 2003/2004, I felt safer driving around Kabul, Bagram, and surrounding areas than I did driving through Baltimore.)

Nowadays, young people need to look at what a degree is worth. Some majors don't result in a high paying job and it might take a long time to pay off a student loan.

That is something that should have been said 10 years ago. There have been a lot of folks who thought a college degree, any college degree was necessary to be successful. I'm afraid there are any number of college degrees with negative ROI over one's lifetime.

Any plan should include being to be prepared to take employment in a field not related to your education or not paying as much as you expected. If you set your sights too high, you will be disappointed for sure. The days of a college or university degree guaranteeing you a job are gone unless you have other skills to go with it, or you are very willing to learn and can find an employer who can recognize this.
