Zero Emission Excavator Brings Demolition Indoors

Posted September 15, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Contractors who require the power and efficiency of a tracked excavator to demolish interiors can now rely on an emission-free auxiliary drive system so easy to handle, one operator can manage the entire operation. Thanks to a dual power concept, this excavator can employ a diesel drive system outdoors, or an emission-free electro-hydraulic drive for indoor use. The machine's "Plug & Play" generator is connected to the undercarriage so operators enjoy 360-degree freedom of movement.

That's what propane powered units are for. Forklifts were using that cheap and highly reliable zero emissions self contained system for indoor operation as long as they existed.

Also even with a mini excavator their base HP requirements are usually several tens of HP minimum which in electrical terms requires more than just a common outlet and extension cord to work.

In realistic terms what it would require is a dedicated and fair sized three phase power source plus a considerable amount of rather large extension cords to deal with as well and that's not even touching the aspects of the likely amount of permits to get said power source in place plus the general inconvenience having a large live power cord strung around a construction job attached to a mobile demolition unit would involve.

I have a fleet of Brokk machines that we have been using in confined spaces (various reactor vessels and kilns or furnaces) for decades.

The Brokk is fully electric and the controls are remote/wireless. The operator can be quite a distance from the machine. In some cases, I mount thermal imaging cameras on them and the operator remains outside the hazardous vessel while the machine is inside doing the work.

I have built several customised machines, one can fit through a 20" manway and expand to its full width once inside, another uses spider leg outriggers instead of tracks and is used in smokestacks to remove liners.

Nice. I can envision that thing crawling out of a fallen brick stack, and the folks all around going bonkers thinking it is the alien apocalypse.

This could turn into a new episode of "Caption This":

Charlie wondered how the new excavator would work indoors, and everything went really went....maybe a little too well.

Inset pic here for 6 o'clock news. Remember, it's news at 6, it is history at 6:15.

That also about the attention span this engenders.
