Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Thirty-Five Years Later, There’s No Van Cooler Than the A-Team’s GMC Vandura

Yeah, the scripts were repetitive, the violence cartoonish, and the continuity near-nonexistent. So what, we children of the Eighties tuned into The A-Team every week for one thing only: to see B.A. Baracus’ red-striped GMC in action, and the show never disappointed, which is why 35 years after the show debuted, we’re still painting red diagonal stripes over any black vehicle we can find.

Sure, there were plenty of other eye-catching cars filling screens at roughly the same time: KITT, the heavily modified Trans-Am; the problematically named (and roofed) General Lee; and Doc Brown’s time-traveling De Lorean. But the one vehicle that made the most sense, for a bunch of ex-military guys hauling weapons and equipment of various sorts for their weekly action-packed adventures, was a big black windowless van with a pushbar and a dozen foglamps.

(Nevermind the fact that the unique red stripe breaking up the two-tone grey-over-black paint made zero sense for a bunch of ex-military guys on the run from a procession of colonels and generals from the military police. We got lunchboxes and action figure sets to sell to the kids!)

But there is rarely agreement about the exact specification's of Mr. T's ultra-van.

Yet another vector striped 'doesn't stand out' vehicle, this one well suited for undercover police officers.

I'd have to disagree.

The coolest van was the 'Vanessa Van' from the movie 'Corvette Summer' with Mark Hamill and Annie Potts.

I also have to disagree. Even though the A-Team's Van was cool. I think the VW Series from the Bus through the Euro Van had some pretty good contenders. I am leaning towards the VW Vanagon Series that has so many models offered and so many cool setups that just keep striving with so many clubs from there 4 wheel drive Syncros to what people are doing with the passenger GL models that get slammed down low as there lowriders, etc.

Having one that is a camper Westfalia model to some other camper models offered throughout the years. I like the club groups that do the engine conversion with Subaru motors, VW TDI motors, even keeping it stock with help for places like the TheSamba.com, VanCafe, RockyMountainWesty, GoWesty, BusDepot, CarParts.com,

and so many others I would love to post. Also talk about that help people give & their passion with the VW Van Models. You can Youtube Vanagon, Syncros, T3's are just a few to see some of the coolest setups, conversion, and custom powertrains. I Europe they have Vanagon Racing events and here and Europe with the Syncro off road event, the campouts, etc. On and on and on. The one to watch for I think is the best is a VW Syncro Camper. Go to GoWesty and see what the cost in purchasing one from them or listed my seller through them go for. You can even follow people posting there blogs living and traveling all over the world with them. Just a very cool contender for this posting. But hey, just my opinion.

Consider this a vote for the B.A.'s B.A. van as the coolest van ever.

Pityin' all those fools who disagree...

Ouch, Didn't expect to get Pityin & getting called a fool. Sad. So sad people go in this direction. Remember this, "A Fool is one whom utters words of nonsense." So you can keep you Pity to yourself. I wish I could go on all day with this with you, but not worst my time.

Ooops!

greines, if you'll take a minute, take a breath, I'm sure we can clear this quickly.

A GOOGLE search of the phrase I pity the fool reveals many, many references to B. A. Baracus, the wheel man in the TV series, driving the van. Pity'n the fool was his buzzphrase.

Takes a while to get used to this place.

LMFAO - I am sitting here at work finally having a change to share my most passion for my Vanagon to share with others and having read the first reply thinking someone was insulting my one of very few feedbacks and yes I humbly and with humility except being the fool that took after pushing the send button that I finally got the saying "I Pity in the fool." I was sitting here saying why would someone say that, so saying it over & over to myself I started to laugh sounding like Mr T. Good one, kudos to you.

B.A. Baracus was one Bad A$$!

I Pity The Fool that ages! Gold loving Mr. T hasn't changed a bit in 25 years

By Daily Mail Reporter

I do have to question his choice of flag themed dress in today's emphisis on flag ettiquite.

But hey, he's Mr T!

Agree... but in jest, one must also consider:

Vans were cool in the sixties for road trip lifestyle choices....and now maybe a little for the tiny home movement...but have become famous for serial killer use for abducting innocent victims, and are no longer the cool vehicle of yesteryear....not even celebrity endorsement can overcome that stigma....School bus conversions have replaced the van....
