Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

After DMV Meetings, Texas Dune Buggy Owners Turn to State Lawmakers for Help

After denying Texas dune buggy owners’ requests to reinstate the titles that the department has revoked over the last few years, Texas Department of Motor Vehicles officials have also rejected the series of recommendations that the Assembled Vehicle Coalition of Texas presented them, leading members of the coalition to seek a solution through the state’s legislature.

“It just doesn’t feel like they want to play ball with us,” Faron Smith said of the state officials he met with in working-group meetings earlier this year. “It seems like they’re just pushing us off, waiting for us to drop it.”

Lone Star dune buggy owners are left with few other options while seeking to legalize their prized recreation vehicles.

I read through the article and found it to be a very one sided rant about adults that believe they could not use their toys. Most telling was the strike through sentence that the DMV was not responding followed by a very nebulous response.

What I wanted this article to clarify was does this Texas DMV ruling of law prohibit dune buggies from only public roadways, public off-road use or the preposterous idea of banning them completely. Depending on how well or poorly the law was written any of those three possibilities could be true and thus forcing the DMV to act this way.
