Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Pop Quiz, Hot Shot: What’s the Bus From “Speed” Worth at Auction?

“Just like driving a really big Pinto,” except Sandra Bullock’s character from the 1994 flick Speed wasn’t referring to the handling characteristics of the GM New Look bus that will now, a quarter-century later, head to auction among more than two dozen other screen-used cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

Buses tend to blend into the background or serve as mere settings in most movies, but the central (some critics with no aesthetic sense might say “shaky”) premise of Speed required a big transit bus running around Los Angeles at no less than 50 miles per hour.

To fill that role, the film’s producers wrangled up to a dozen mid-Sixties GM “fishbowl” TDH-5303 40-foot buses and painted them in liveries approximating, though not replicating, the Big Blue Bus livery of the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines.

Who will be the next savior of the bus from Speed?

I'd be surprised if anybody bought the bus. The movie wasn't that great in spite of a good cast. If the movie turned into a cult classic, then I could see interest. Otherwise, it's a big heap of scrap metal. Maybe some sort of movie oriented theme park might have some interest. We need to just let some things go.

Agreed.

in a world where we have “too much shtt”

we are better to feed the recycling god with that one and treasure the quality icons that are still around.

If it was a good movie,... then it might show some interest... but it wasn't a good movie... and Sandra Bullock's acting was poor... and Keanu Reeves made the most from s script that had as much suspense as waiting in line at a gas station/convenience shop.

ON the other hand, the Bus from 1977 movie "The Gautlet' starring Clint Eastwood, may bring some interest,... as well as a tow truck...

Who will be the next savior of the bus from Speed?....

Coming in September,... Speed 3,... about a Millennial who was just forcible evicted from his crib, and a hot air balloon.... Starring Michael Rotondo as Mikey....

Due to contract disagreements, Mikey will not be played by Michael Rotondo. Instead, Mikey will be played by... Rosie O'Donnell
