Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

As Part of Effort to Make it a National Historic Trail, Route 66 Added to Most Endangered Historic Places List

Posted July 03, 2018 9:00 AM by dstrohl

Time’s running out to preserve Route 66, the National Trust for Historic Preservation warned. The nonprofit, which has already endorsed the proposal to designate the Mother Road a National Historic Trail, this week highlighted the urgency of the situation by adding Route 66 to its annual list of the country’s Most Endangered Historic Places.

“While Congress has taken important steps to designate Route 66 a permanent National Historic Trail, which would bring national recognition and economic development to the route’s historic sites, legislation must be passed by the U.S. Senate… before the end of 2018,” the National Trust for Historic Preservation wrote in including Route 66 on its list. “Otherwise, a vital preservation opportunity may be lost.”

To route to permanent preservation has opened up for Rt. 66.

Let the states do it. If they want. Uncle Sugar doesn't need to fund this boondoggle.

I agree.

Route 66 preservation is one of those ‘small but vocal minority’ things. I honestly believe there is almost nothing remaining to really preserve, and any features of any significance are hundreds of miles apart.

This ship sailed about 40 years ago....The problem is rt 66 was never more than some cheap motels and greasy roadside diners, with the cheesiest of roadside attractions....they never evolved...It died a natural death,,RIP....

Back in the 40's 50's and 60's, vacations were road trips, because gas was cheap and people liked to go exploring, think about it, this was when tv was just starting, everything new was out there, on the highways, just waiting to be discovered...Now it's flying everywhere, time is precious, and everything is expensive...It's not about the travel, it's about the destination...Imagine if gas was still $.25 cents a gallon and motel rooms were $10 a night, why we would all be taking road trips...but now gas is 14 times that, and mileage is not that much better, if at all, and motel rooms, you're lucky to find anything for $100 a night, and it probably won't be that clean....no,, road trips are a thing of the past, and historic routes just another sign on the highway....We all tour the world from our living rooms in high def, snacking on chips and dip, from the comfort and safety of our lazyboy recliners sipping beer, in our underwear....haha
