Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

“Sometimes you think it’d be better to walk:” The Lada as Metaphor for Russian Determination

Dieter Deswarte doesn’t care about the Lada’s development, where it was built, how much power its engine was good for. Instead, as we see in his short film, “Lada,” he’s more concerned with where the vehicles end up decades after they’re built, how they’re used, and who’s still driving them. They’re rugged, but they break down all the time; they’re maligned, but also cherished; they’re cold machines, but they’re also parts of their owners’ families. And through the cars we get to see the complex and resolute people who depend on them in Russia’s snowy north.

Enjoy the short video on Hemmings Daily.

"They are rugged, but they break down all the time"

Sounds like an oxymoron to me :)

Pick one!

Well . . . . rugged means it is strong and can survive abuse.

It is subtly different than reliable. You could have a very reliable car on smooth roads that does not survive rough roads.

Yes, a very subtle distinction. In practicality, it's a distinction without a difference.

They both mean unreliable crap that you don't want to buy :)

Where do you get parts for it?

Find another one and follow it, picking up what falls off...

What's the difference between a Lada and a golf ball?

You can drive a golf ball 200 yards.

You can get the rear window heater option...

It keeps your hands warm while you're pushing it!

Double the value of your Lada, fill up the gas tank!
