Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Watch This: A Moment of Gearhead Zen

Ever seen those apps for your phone that promise some sort of calming for an otherwise agitated mind? There's no shortage of them in your app store, which begs the question: Just how irritated are we, every waking moment? Do we need our phones to calm us down, after they seem to be the very portal for all the things that get us worked up in the first place?

Gearheads know something that the rest of the world seems to not quite understand: Hand-washing a car is about the most "zen" thing a human being can experience. We heard a story, once (maybe an urban legend), about the designers at Ford hand-washing a first-gen Thunderbird as part of the process of designing the last Thunderbird. And we instantly understood that process, since there's no better way to understand the reasons for a particular body design than to get your actual hands on the actual sheet metal and turn an inanimate object into something with a soul and, dare we say it, a heartbeat.

So, as we focus our obsessions on the the legendary IROC-Z Camaro of yore this week, here at the Muscle Machines headquarters, we offer our own calming app: a fat half-hour of washing and detailing a first-gen IROC-Z. When you need a break from the 24-hour cable news cycle and can't take one more Facebook rant, turn to this post from your friends at Hemmings and let the video roll. You're very, very welcome.

I would wash my car, but the dirt is the only thing holding it together.

I wash my care by hand often. Though I do suffer self-inflicted guilt on "Where does that water go?" But in weather that I cannot wash my car by hand and it needs it (as an accumulation of winter salt is clinging to it), I have to confess that many times the highlight of my day has been driving through a car wash.

They are just so cool!
