Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Legendary Hirohata Mercury Up for Sale for the First Time in 60 Years

The last time anybody had a chance to buy the world's most celebrated custom - one lauded as the epitome of a Fifties custom car, one that garnered hundreds of trophies, one that is now considered an American cultural touchstone - it sat on a used car lot somewhere in Southern California, nearly forgotten, used up and good only for a high-schooler's first car. Sixty-three years later, that high-schooler's family will put the Hirohata Merc up for sale with far more fanfare and with what is likely to be a record-shattering price tag.

McNiel died in May 2018, and while his family put the car up for sale via Instagram in March of this year, they have since listed the Hirohata Mercury with Mecum for its Kissimmee auction, scheduled for January 6-15, 2022. Mecum did not list a pre-auction estimate for the car, but a Mecum spokesperson said it's expected to sell for more than $1 million.

So is a Ferrari F1; so what is your point?

To everyone else: This is now a collector car, often referred to as a "Trailer Queen"; it's value is no longer defined by the pragmatic or social demands placed on daily transportation. Rather, it is very same-same as a Delahaye 165, Picasso, Tiffany or F.L. Wright. Now you may question how a chopped, cut and rebuilt 1950's road tank got to this level; well some people like vanilla, some like chocolate and some like frozen banana yogurt.

Interesting. Perhaps beyond belief, but you are implying anyone who likes a nice dessert would part with $1m for a car? When I can buy a 2010 Aston Martin with 19000 miles on the clock for BGP35000.00. Looks like dessert is not healthy for anyone's wallet.

Cheaper to buy a new Kenworth or Oshkosh horse and trailer and avoid desserts at all cost.

Ice cream anyone?

My point, in case you can't read between the lines is that this car is fugly. I wouldn't want it if someone gave it to me.

To wit:Some modern art:

If a crucifix in a bottle of urine can be considered art,I have flushed millions of dollars

down the toilet...or course, that is just my opinion.

I have spilled paint on a drop cloth that could have brought millions,if I had known.

I am sure many will be offended by my lack of artistic sophistication and ignorance of

true"ART",but everyone is offended by something,it is part of life.

(Some are even offended by double spacing of text.)

We must remember that ,we,the common people are, in the words of an infamous

female,are "The Despicables."

I can entertain differing opinions, without malice or hate, but sometimes with a little of humor and a lot of tolerance.

It would be foolish of me to think that others do not think the same of me or mine.

Nearly 8 billion opinions in the world, each equally valuable to the owner.

Lighten up and enjoy life.

Eat dessert first.

Life is short.

So what is the scrap value of this car? With the rush to have electric cars everywhere or no cars at all, is this value realistic? What can you do with a vehicle that will be banned from the streets soon? Is it really an investment item or just pretty looking scarp metal?

I am curious to what you think in these times ahead.

Banned from the road is not likely. IC powered cars are likely to be banned from production long before they become illegal to operate. It's not this car, but millions of IC powered cars in common usage that create an air pollution problem. Getting fuel for it may be another matter though...

There are some new young politicians in Australia who are so melted in the brain that their brilliant contribution to the world is to push for all ICE cars over 15 years old to be scrapped.

There would be a few billion dollars worth of vintage , classic and collectable cars still driven here and i cant quite fathom someone crushing a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO or 1954 Mercedes Gullwing.

If the same quality of research went into diagnosing the cause of mental illness in these Green Politicians the obvious solution would be to ban Soy Latte Coffee AND the machinery used to make it.

Common sense or magic? Take the magic. It makes more sense than common sense these days and it is more believable too.

Magic: Possessing distinctive qualities that produce unaccountable or baffling effects.

Common sense: Sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts.

Same thing to me, Magic! It was here and now it is gone. Magic!

Not quite on topic but a further example of where common sense isnt ...

Two state Governments in Australia have shut down forestry for environmental reasons... because they think houses should be built from plastic , concrete and steel , all of which cause more environmental harm that the use of timber.
Further , where only timber can be used to construct homes and furniture they will now import timber from Malaysia and Indonesia which comes from knocking down Orangutan habitat.

for environmental reasons.

It is always easier and better to shift the problem/blame to anther and feel guilt free. Normal in today's pretty stupid world of idiots in charge.

Could you provide links to information about these misguided efforts and those who pursue them? I don't have any links into Australian newspapers or other media.
