Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Everything a Horse Can Do at Three Times the Speed: How the Land Rover Went From Agricultural Machine to World Explorer

Though it doesn't fit the definition of the coachbuilt Jeeps we recently described, the Land Rover came about in that same era, had similar origins, aspired to much of the same use as the postwar civilian Jeeps, and appealed to many of the same customers as those more posh leftover wartime Willys.

What set the Land Rover apart, as we soon see in this 1997 documentary produced for the 50th anniversary of the Landie, comes down to the Rover company and its need for a postwar savior, the export-or-die dictum for postwar British automakers and the global stability of the Fifties. All three led to the Land Rover finding its niche as the vehicle of choice for explorers, expeditionists and colonizers, and to the Land Rover's reputation as a rugged and capable four-wheel-drive vehicle.
