Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

What Would You Do With a 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood Hearse?

Posted April 06, 2022 5:00 AM by dstrohl

There's an argument that hearses aren't actually spooky, despite the reputation, because those transported in the rear section have already passed away (and by the same logic, ambulances are more likely to be haunted if you believe in such things). But for the sake of discussion, let's leave Halloween or even active funeral home duty aside when we ponder what else this 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood Hearse for sale on Hemmings.com would be useful for.

You've plenty of space in the rear, supported by an old-school ladder frame chassis. Sure, it could serve as contractor's car, but that seems like a cruel fate for such a well-preserved veneer interior. The rollers on the floor, though, would be handy for some kind of commercial application. So, what's the best use for a vintage luxury hearse now that it's no longer carrying passengers to their final destination? Surfboard delivery? Antique furniture hauling? Wedding cake and catering wagon?

Back in the seventies, I had a '59 Caddy hearse. We could haul everything in our band aound, and the casket rollers were great for rolling Vox Super Beatle stacks in. I miss that old car, but sold it to a guy who used it in demolition derbies after I went off to college.
