Is Grassoline the Future of Alternative Fuel?

Posted April 18, 2009 8:39 AM

Despite the problems with producing ethanol from corn, biofuels are still promising alternatives to petroleum. Scientists and engineers continue to work on ways to extract fuels from biomasses, such as grasses and other cellulosic components. Are there energy-efficient and cost-effective ways to extract usable fuel from biomass? What kind of infrastructure will be required to support the shift from oil to these alternatives?

After working for a company that serviced and installed equipment in ethanol plants for a number of years I believe that the current biofuel industry is a political solution to the problem. Other countries have been using sugar cain for many years to produce fuel very successfully but with the regulations on sugar in the USA that is not possible at this time. I do not believe that grassoline will work any better than what we have now. The other thing to consider is that we are geared to use gasoline and I think it will be some time before we can switch to a bio based fuel here. There is a very noticeable difference in fuel mileage when using a biofuel versus an oil based product. My brother drives a semi for a big company on a dedicated route, Sioux Falls to Des Moines every night. He is driving a new truck with all the emission equipment on it and gets 6 to 7 mpg. His old truck, 2002 same mfg, would get 8 to 10 on the same route. Both trucks are governed at 65.

I just don't have a lot of faith in biofuel at this time but we have to start somewhere right?

I have no faith in it, as the 10% ethanol / 90% gasoline mix at many stations yields 20% less mileage than normal gasoline. I drive an inline 4cyl. mitsubishi engine.
