I Hate Microsoft with the White Hot Fury of a Thousand Suns!

03/03/2016 6:57 PM

Just got Office 365.

What a POS!

I had Outlook Express before this and now it's Outlook.

Guess what? It's like trying to read Chinese.

Drafts are buried where, no one knows.

Hit the Trash icon, looking for something you accidental deleted, and your current message disappears, never to be found.

It's a maddening, frustrating experience to which no one should be subjected.

Why not just leave all the known feature findable?

Why force the user to relearn, in a very painful process how to use the system all over again?

The Help feature must have been written by the devil.

It does not help, it just makes you want to choke the life out of the idiot who put this all together.

I'll spend hours now, Googling for help in doing things that were intuitive yesterday.

Rant off.

Is that the one where you store all your work in the Clod? The Russkies invented this first, you know.

Italicizing and underlining that would no doubt up the emphasis, too.

I've lost the start menu....I left click on the button and nothing happens....I've been working on it for three days and finally had to create a new user identity....I've been searching online and find the problem is common with plenty of "fixes" that don't work...It seems to have something to do with Cortana...I removed it from the bar....what a pain in the arse...I know what you're thinking , just reactivate it....NOPE doesn't work....Win 10 Waiting for a patch...

Why force the user to relearn, in a very painful process how to use the system all over again?

Because people probably wouldn't pay full price and buy it if the interface looked exactly the same as the previous version.

I for one would if they just kept the blessed Office package the same, they have made it worse overall not better with their changes.

It's like buying a new car with an automatic transmission and no indicator on the shift lever and having all the gears be in a different position every week.

Only if the gear lever is also located in a different part of the car than it was previously. I mean, why? It's poor design practice hiding common functions while bringing totally uncommon and never used functions front and centre.

Did they not trial it with user groups to test usability?

More than likely they tested it with the other frustrated programmers in the office.

And with all the programmers somewhere between 'tipsy' and 'almost too drunk to sit in a chair without falling.' You know, that level of inebriation where all you can think of are bad ideas, but they all sound like GREAT ideas.

Less than half the current assembly could pass the firth grade. (they were held back between fifth and fourth). They could not pass geography about the firth of forth either.

Perhaps that could be a new game show, to compete with Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? We could call it Are You As Dumb As a U.S. Congressman? I know the gender-neutral term is 'congressperson,' but A: the women in Congress haven't racked up as bad a record as the men yet (Due to their relatively recent arrival, and their extreme minority status in both chambers), and B: congressperson might be too big a word for the target demographic.

"Thank you, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitstaff generously, they work really hard for the less-than-minimum-wage the casino pays them, and try the veal platter. The head chief made me say that last sentence. He threatened to carve me like a turkey if I forgot to push the daily we've-got-too-much-of-this-in-the-freezer-and-it's-going-to-go-bad-soon." (an arm wielding a meat cleaver shows up right behind the side curtain of the stage) "Er, I meant to say the daily SPECIAL, of course."

So how did you enjoy BHB's visit to Illinois this week (speaking of white-hot fury, of course)?

Now he has the gall to have had something to do with employment recovery in rural Illinois? Really? I think I have been pooped into marshmellow world, and drenched in free Bubble-up. Did you get any rainbow stew? Did they hand out silver spoons?

It's all good stuff. I am waiting for the watermelon roundup in my home town this summer.

Re: I HATE MICROSOFT WITH THE WHITE HOT FURY OF A THOUSAND SUNS!

Sir, you wound me. I was not doing ISIS, I was doing "Stand-up comedian wrapping up a set at dinner theatre," and using the trope of 'educating people through humor.'

Many people, including most Americans, don't realize that American waitstaff are typically paid at a rate WELL below minimum wage, and many people don't realize that the 'daily special' at a restaurant is a dish that uses up a supply that, while still fresh, is going to hit it's 'cannot serve to the public' date in a day or two.

The cleaver-wielding hand from the side curtain is another performer or a stagehand playing the role of 'chief angry at people bad-mouthing the food.'

To quote Roger Elizabeth Dubree, playing Adolf Elizabeth Hitler in the play Springtime for Hitler, a play-within-a-movie from the Film adaptation of the musical interpretation of the classic film The Producers(1), "♫The thing you gotta know is, every thing is SHOW BIZ...♫"

Notes:

  1. All that makes sense in context. If you're familiar with Mel Brooks it might even make sense on its own.

I recently got the old PC from my parents house... it was slow as crap.
I bought a Linux CD for £6 which wiped the hard drive and installed Linux Mint. The internet connection came straight up there are tons of programs that can be downloaded, all seems good and it's faster than this PC now.
I'm just using it occasionally as its in a spare bedroom. Meanwhile I've disabled updates on this PC as it was just getting slower and slower and trying to download lots of win 10 crap.

Great thing is it takes about 10 seconds to boot up rather than a minute.

The sooner we all give Billy Boy the finger and go Linux the better.

I am just trying to figure out how to put linux on my laptop without losing all I have so far. If it were a desktop, I would make a dual hard drive dual boot. If I had the money, I would buy a huge hard drive clone my existing into a partition and put linux in the other partition...but alas, no funds for such fun.

So, it's one of those days whose name ends in a 'y'.

Read to the rhythm of the GEICO™ TV-commercial:

"Microsoft™, land of the "...new & improved..." bugs, glitches, incompatibilities, and changes-for-changes sake software with each 'new' upgrade.

It's what they do.

Maybe they should just fix their 'old' problems before foisting new ones upon the market?"

Don't do Microsoft unless required to.

After much pestering, did the FREE W7 to W10 upgrade and had 2 years of email (Thunderbird) go south because W10 decided 'more space' was required. Returning to W7 ended up in being locked out of a whole heap of graphics. Thankyou Microsoft. Word 2007 and Excel 2007 are going well .... but no doubt Microsoft will be around soon to kill off my options.

When all said and done, It Is a MICROSOFT product. My Windows 7 keeps "Not Responding". I have to reload an old backup but of course the fool thing updates the same virus time and again. Is there any hope? or do I go Linux like many others have?

Bugger !

Maybe there is a simple solution .... the undocumented feature!

Having just wrestled with a Thunderbird issue for 3 days, and the unhelpful help, (yes another common complaint that often goes hand in hand with the previously mentioned UF (undocumented feature) or MUF (Microsoft undocumented feature), maybe a short Wikipedia history lesson is called for.

"Undocumented features are frequently found in software releases. Sometimes the documentation is omitted through simple oversight, but undocumented features are often elements of the software not intended for use by end users, but left available for use by the vendor for software support and development.

Since the suppliers of the software usually consider the software documentation to constitute a contract for the behavior of the software, undocumented features are generally left unsupported, and may be removed or changed at will and without notice to the users.

Sometimes such a feature (for example, the ability to change the switch character in MS-DOS, usually to a hyphen) is included for compatibility (in this case with Unix utilities) or future-expansion reasons, but if the software provider changes their mind or goes out of business, the absence of documentation makes it easier to justify the feature's removal.

New versions of software might omit mention of old (possibly superseded) features in documentation but keep them implemented for users who've grown accustomed to them.[1]

In other cases, software bugs are referred to jokingly as undocumented features. ("It's not a bug; it's an undocumented feature!") [2] This usage may have been popularised in some of Microsoft's responses to bug reports for its first Word for Windows product,[3] but doesn't originate there. The oldest surviving reference on Usenet dates to 5 March 1984.[4] Between 1969 and 1972, Sandy Mathes, a systems programmer for PDP-8 software at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in Maynard, MA, used the terms "bug" and "feature" in her reporting of test results to distinguish between undocumented actions of delivered software products that were unacceptable and tolerable, respectively. This usage may have been perpetuated.[5]

Ironically, undocumented features themselves have become a major feature of computer games. Developers often include various cheats and other special features ("easter eggs") that are not explained in the packaged material, but have become part of the "buzz" about the game on the Internet and among gamers. The undocumented features of foreign games are often elements that were not localized from their native language.

Closed source APIs can also have undocumented functions that are not generally known. These are sometimes used to gain a commercial advantage over third-party software by providing additional information or better performance to the application provider."

As for my own Thunderbird issue of inserted pics coming up as 'broken links' and no pics, I ended up with 2 laptops, side by side, one working and mine as a dud, and then set about seeking out drop window by drop window until I found an obscure difference. And yep ... SUCCESS! Oh how I love UF's, MUF's and now TUF's .... Thunderbird's UP contribution.

Yes but, everything I've mentioned was an existing feature that was formerly intuitively obvious to the user, before the latest "improvement" was unleashed released. These features still exist, as far as I can tell in the same form but well hidden under layers of other headings and traps not in the former release.

And "help" doesn't.

Normally I tend to support MS but when it comes to Office, no, I find their love a changing everything quite annoying. This is a basic tool of commerce and as such should not require training every two years to use.

Sadly this has always a problem with computer geeks who all think their "new" way of doing things is better and everyone should be made to use it.

At this point, the use of Office is so integrated into modern office life that you can't really be successful without a solid working knowledge of it. Probably why we are still using Office 2010. LoL

I'm reading Bill Bryson's latest book, The Road to Little Dribbling. If you've read it, you'll remember Bryson's rant about Microsoft. If you haven't read it, well, he wrote a shorter, less-comprehensive and eloquent disparagement, in which he describes the operating system on his new laptop as "Microsoft Gestapo." And he points out that if you don't install the updates you get reminded every 15 seconds until eternity.

That's nothing! I hate Microsoft Office 365 with the fury of one thousand Solaris lasers (solar-pumped Cr:Nd:YAG lasers). Concentrated sunlight is not hot enough to dissociate MgO to Mg vapor and oxygen, but Solaris is.

I hate it when I am deleting stupid spam emails (that nothing ever filters out), and it keeps on auto-deleting emails after my hands totally leave the computer, but the cursor is still over the red X.

I can tell you there is more than one cursor in the room when this happens, and also more than one red X.

Sadly, the father of Microsoft has abandoned his aborted child and it has mutated.

Abandoned a child, or fled from a growing Eldrich Abomination?

I got sucked into the W7 to W10 update last August 2015 and painfully withdrew.
Well, Tuesday this week I got sucked in again with a W7 to W10.
You would think that I would learn and not be tempted ...
but I was and now I am paying for it.
And despite the claims about changing screen resolution etc,
my A4 page (297x210mm) in CorelDRAW X5 is effectively now a square on the screen.
How I "LOVE" Microsoft.

Our controls tech.. he just bought a small lap top with W7, (a lot of our business programs are running on W7) it getting too difficult to keep that running. Allan Bradley in June will be W10 compatible.

I guess after that, it won't be too much longer and there will be more of us that will have a colonoscopy exam from Gates.

James Stewart's

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just build a better one."

says it all. It wasn't broke, and they didn't build a better one - just a bigger pain.

Here is another "Stewartism":

the fun part: If you can't make it simple, you better make it last. If you can't make it last, you better make it cheap, as in dirt cheap. That way when a customer orders one from you, you just go ahead and ship the replacement along with it!

We have started using this thing they have on Office 365 called "Share Point". Thus far, when I attempt to access a file someone is "sharing", it requires me to log in, but I didn't know or realize I already had this log in set up.

Finally, yesterday evening some time, I managed to see the file. Wow, what a pain. All because they are afraid their 10kB excel file is going to use up TB on the city servers.

Now it has its single 10kB, with everyone trying to access and use that file for purchasing requests, I can just imagine the queue being similar to the TSA line at Chicago O'Hare.

Your tax dollars hard at work, or working hardly.
