New Jersey is the First State to Mandate Chemical Plant Safety Standards

12/05/2005 11:22 AM

Three cheers to my once home state of New Jersey. Under the direction of Acting Governor Richard J. Codey, NJ just implemented the nations first set of mandatory chemical plant safety standards. These standards serve as both an incident prevention and response plan for all 140 of NJ's chemical facilities. Hopefully other states will follow suit as the threat of terrorism is always out there.

Are they substantive and useful, or are they just going to make the day-to-day work in plants more difficult? ore often than not, these governmental regualtions provide political cover for politicians at the expense of sensibility.

Federalism?

Do the new regulations make New Jersey less competitive when compared to other states? In other words, would a chemical company in search of a new site now choose some other state over NJ? If this is the case, then the federal government's failure to take the lead forces state government to make the truly hard choices of jobs vs. safety.
