"Flippy" the Hamburger Patty Cooking Fool

03/13/2018 1:13 AM

Flippy, the hamburger cooking robot could be coming to a Caliburger restaurant near you. This specially designed burger cooking robotic system precisely cooks burger patties. The unit, which sells for between $60,000-$80,000 comes with a cloud connected artificial intelligence platform.

The system combines thermal vision, 3d and computer vision data and machine learning algorithms. The device, known as, " An automated kitchen assistant " , is manufactured by Fanuc & brought to life by Miso Robotics.

Kitchen staff are required to set a bun down, put a piece of cheese on top, wrap it up. The implications with this type of system and others to follow is that marginally educated people are going to have a hard time finding jobs that require repetitive motion.

A recent report from the Mc Kinsey global institute predicts that 400-800 million people worldwide could be displaced by automation within 15 years or less.

Are you ready for the next revolution of, " Burgers on Demand " ?

<...Caliburger restaurant near you...>

According to Google Maps, the nearest one is 1035 miles away, and getting there involves a 2h flight each way with a return fare of $430USD.

Kitchen staff are required

Soooo, how is this any different from using a complicated automatic fryer for example? The robot is still a tool, not a replacement for the staff.

Sure you may need less staff, but again - a tool to increase efficiency, not a replacement.

Wait until you meet the robotic buns handler.

That answer made as much sense as,,,,

In the movie, " A bridge too far " the German generals adjunct crosses the bridge with a white flag, he then says : " My general would like to discuss the terms of your surrender," the English lieutenant then answers him back " I'm sorry, but we don't have the proper facilities to take you all prisoner " , the adjunct then says " what " ? , the lieutenant then replies, " will there be anything else ?

Flipping a hamburger is so trivial that I find it hard to conceive it is a reasonable target of automation.

OTOH given the inability of human staff to properly cook a hamburger at some establishments, maybe it is a good idea for them.... Does the flipper know when a burger is done? In some way that a human attendant wasn't able or willing to tell?

I'm not expecting robot flippers at my preferred burger joint, any time soon.

I heard an update that Flippy got a pink slip. The human staff couldn't keep up with it.

Ultimately, we will need to establish a guaranteed annual income for people as there will not be enough jobs for the current token economy to function without massive kill offs of excess labor.

let that sentence sink in folks.

No, that is the gobbledygook of those who want to get compensated for doing nothing. Hasn't even come close to that. Adapt to change or perish. The way it's always been and the way it always will be. Let that sink in.

Dude, we currently have more people on the planet than we have jobs available. You really think that trend is going to reverse?

OK, that is a fact.

As a comedian once noted. "MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS"!

I always hope we will evolve into a more compassionate, civilized race before some advanced race decides WE are the "excess population" and "helps" us not contaminate the galaxy.

After seeing this video, I'm really not impressed.I'd keep that system for cleaning the grill though. The time will come, no doubt and we'll have fully automated beef wellington and sushi, never mind burgers simply stacked and wrapped. Food automation such as this has to start somewhere, but for now, Flippy has a very long way to go! I think John Henry would agree.

  • Work like your employer is watching you.
  • Imagine how a robot would gracefully and skilfully do the task you have and try to mimic those fliud motions. See how swift you can become without compromising quality.
  • Imagine you are a programmer watching your robot perform this work while your supervisor watches on right before the two of you head out to have a rare lunch together and discuss your future.

..if you can do all of that?

You may already be automated.

There are conveyor broilers that cook hamburgers and buns. All you have to do is feed the machine and out comes a cooked burger and a bun (separate conveyors). I'm sure the system could be upgraded to have automatic feed and position the bun at the exit to receive the burger and another machine to drop a piece of cheese and condiments and wrap it. I recently heard of a vending machine that makes a pizza from scratch, bakes it and dispenses it in a matter of minutes. The technology is here; has been for a long time. More sane minds may have realized that putting millions out of work might not be such a good idea.
